Beschreibung

This Range Rover was originally sold in Sweden in 1974. The current owner purchased the car in July 2002 in Axmar, at which point the odometer read 89,700 km. Shortly after the purchase, several repairs were carried out, including rust repairs to the frame near the rear wheels, brake system refurbishment with new discs and pads all around, as well as new seals in the front brake calipers.

In 2004, the doors were refurbished and the rear window was replaced. The body sides and tailgate were repainted, while the hood and roof were left untouched. The car has been used as a hobby/enthusiast vehicle, for commuting, and for the occasional off-road outing. However, it does not appear to have seen much off-road use, as the underside is seemingly in good condition.

It has never been difficult to start, and according to the owner, all auxiliary equipment functions as it should. The engine is in original condition and has not been opened during the current ownership, but it has been maintained with regular oil and filter changes.

The car comes with two sets of keys, and included separately are the original wheels fitted with old tires. No service book is available.

Fakten zum Modell

As early as the 1950s, Rover had plans for—and even built prototypes of—a more car-like and comfortable version of its rugged off-roader, the Land Rover. However, it wasn't until 1966 that development of the Range Rover began, inspired by the success of American off-road vehicles like the Ford Bronco and Jeep Wagoneer. The Range Rover was introduced in the summer of 1970.

Like the Land Rover, the new model featured solid axles, a separate ladder frame, and outer body panels made of aluminum—except for the bonnet and the lower part of the split tailgate. However, the Range Rover came with coil springs, disc brakes all around, and permanent four-wheel drive with both high and low range. Its engine was the aluminum V8 Rover had purchased from Buick, recently introduced in the large P5 saloon.

Despite being fast and comfortable on the highway thanks to its V8 and long suspension travel, the Range Rover was also fully capable off-road, matching the Land Rover in rough terrain. The interior was basic, with vinyl upholstery and rubber floor mats designed to be hosed down after off-road use. Rover originally envisioned landowners and estate managers as the main customer base, but the Range Rover quickly appealed to city dwellers as well. Demand far exceeded supply, forcing Rover to ramp up production significantly.

During the turbulent 1970s, British Leyland failed to further develop its successful model, leaving room for independent companies like Swiss firm Monteverdi to create their own versions—with four doors and added luxury features. It wasn’t until 1981 that a factory-produced four-door Range Rover became available. In 1982, an automatic transmission was introduced as an option, and the following year, the manual gearbox was upgraded with a fifth gear.

Rover began to capitalize on the Range Rover’s luxury potential with various special editions featuring leather upholstery and plush carpets. The most enduring of these was the Vogue, which remained the top-of-the-line Range Rover model for many years.

While the V8 engine was powerful, it was also thirsty. Especially on export markets, there was a demand for a more fuel-efficient diesel. In 1986, a turbo diesel engine from Italian manufacturer VM Motori was introduced, later replaced by Land Rover’s own direct-injection diesel unit.

The final evolution came in 1992 with the LWB (long wheelbase) version, offering a 20 cm longer wheelbase and air suspension. The first-generation Range Rover continued in production alongside its successor for a time, with the last models sold under the name “Classic.”
