"Lohne Werke produced, among other things, mopeds and scooters, and their Sissy model was a popular choice from the late 1940s onward. Here we have a rare 1962 example for our part of the world, in fine original condition after spending many years in a museum. Anyone eager to hop on, honk the horn, and ride will first need to give it a thorough check-over and a careful startup."

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

It hasn’t been ridden in many years, but with a standard Sachs engine of around 3 hp and three gears, getting it running again should pose no major issues.

  • Zustand Interieur:

Nice saddle and complete with speedometer and other original details.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

Lovely, seemingly original paintwork in cheerful pastel colors typical of the late '50s/early '60s. Nice wheels fitted with whitewall tires.

  • Zustand gesamt:

This is a small city scooter with a lively and cheerful personality. Show up at a meet or a hot dog stand with this, and you're likely the only one riding a Lohner—but you’ll definitely be in the spotlight. Both the design and the brand’s history give you plenty of interesting stories to share. A charming classic and a bold little character.

Fakten zum Modell

The company was originally founded in Austria by Heinrich Lohner in 1821 as a coachbuilding workshop. From 1823 to 1863, the company operated under the name Laurenzi & Lohner following a merger with a saddlemaker. After the latter’s death, the company was renamed Jacob Lohner & Co., after the founder’s son, who then took over. Jacob transitioned from coachbuilder to industrialist, producing 300–500 carriages per year and exporting horse-drawn vehicles to countries including Norway and Sweden.

In 1887, the next generation took over when Ludwig Lohner assumed control of the business. By 1896, the company had begun producing automobiles, and in 1898, they hired a young Ferdinand Porsche. Together, they developed electric and hybrid vehicles—designed by Porsche—including the most famous example: a car powered by a petrol engine driving a generator, which in turn powered electric motors in the front wheels. Highly innovative, but ahead of its time.

Production expanded to include airplanes, trams, scooters, and more. After Austria was annexed by Germany in 1938, the company came under state ownership and produced vehicles and components for military use. After the war, it returned to private ownership when the Lohner family regained control. It was during this postwar period that scooter production resumed, including the launch of the popular Sissy L 125.

In 1959, Lohner Werke merged with Rotax, a company known for engine manufacturing. They also secured various subcontracts, producing products for the arms industry and recreational vehicles like Ski-Doos for other firms. One of these clients was Canadian company Bombardier, which acquired Lohner in 1970, forming Bombardier-Rotax. Thus ended the 150-year story of Lohner as an independent manufacturer.
