"A fine Coupé from Peugeot’s golden era. During the latter half of the 1960s, thanks to Gjestvang’s successes in Sweden, Peugeot ranked in the Top 10 of sales statistics. However, the Coupé model was a rare gem in these parts, with only a few dozen sold per year between 1964 and 1968.

This car has been well preserved and is ready to drive, though it does have some cosmetic details that need attention. Otherwise, it appears to function well, but as with all cars that have been stationary for some time, a thorough inspection and possible servicing are recommended."

Beschreibung

This car was registered in Sweden on June 12, 1967. The Peugeot dealer Bilfirma Sven Wixner AB in Stockholm sold it new to a merchant in Sundbyberg on June 21, 1967, originally registered as BA 6782. It had just under three months of driving on the left-hand side before Sweden’s switch to right-hand traffic on September 3, 1967.

In the early 1970s, the car made its way to Motorcentrum in Kramfors, where a mechanic acquired it in June 1971, then registered as Y 29073. He owned the car until 2010, when his daughter and her husband took over. Over the years, the car was used sparingly, often only during the bright half of the year as an enthusiast vehicle.

It was repainted early on, though the exact timing and reason remain uncertain. The car has been rust-proofed and is well-preserved, with only some older repairs. At some point—likely in the 1990s—it received a new rear fender and new passenger-side headlights after a minor off-road excursion, as well as new bumpers following a light collision.

In 2017, the cylinder head was refurbished, including valve adjustments, fuel injection system servicing, and an ultrasonic cleaning of the injectors. The front brakes were also attended to sometime in the 2010s. After spending some time in storage, the current owner acquired the car in June last year. Since then, it has undergone several updates, including:

Refurbished rear brakes with new cylinders and brake shoes
New windshield with rubber seal
Correct wiper arms and blades
New door seals and trunk seal
Newer hubcaps
Updated lighting components
New textile floor mats
Electrical system inspection and general cleaning

The odometer reads 10,995 km, and it is likely that it has only rolled over once, suggesting a total of 111,000 km, though this cannot be guaranteed. The car comes with an owner’s manual, various literature, and a set of spare keys. Additionally, a new rear window seal and white/orange position/indicator lenses are included. The car is inspected and ready to drive.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

The car starts easily and runs smoothly, with a gentle rhythm and the characteristic slight chatter of the Kugelfischer mechanical injection system. It has a newer battery.

During a short test drive, all mechanical functions appeared to be in good working order, including steering, handling, clutch operation, gear shifting, and braking.

It has not been inspected on a lift, but the underside looks solid based on what could be observed of the vital components. There are some minor paint chips and small pores along the lower edges.

  • Zustand Interieur:

The interior is well-preserved in original condition, showing normal wear for its age and mileage. The seats are in good shape, with only minor foam deterioration. Both the front seats and rear bench are upholstered in well-maintained faux leather, with fully functional adjustments, easy access to the rear, and a working center armrest.

The door panels are in great condition, though the driver’s side handle/armrest shows some wear. The headliner is clean, and the carpets are in excellent shape, with the textile ones recently replaced in original style.

The steering wheel, controls, and instrument panel are in fine original condition, with all gauges, the clock, and the lighter fully functional. The heating and ventilation system also work properly. Three-point seat belts are installed in the front.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

The paintwork is in good usable condition, finished in its original color, Blanc Arosa, with mild age-related wear, including some scuffs and scratches. It was repainted many years ago to the standard of the time, and while generally presentable, there are some details that could be improved.

The front end has a couple of older plastic repairs beneath the position/indicator lights, now exposed (see photos) and temporarily taped. There is also a bulge or previous repair on the left front fender, near the rear edge of the wheel well down to the rocker panel. The left rear fender has been replaced, with a slight variation in color tone.

The chrome and trim present well for the car’s age and mileage, including bumpers (newer replacements), moldings, glass, rubber seals, and lighting components. There are minor damages on the lower part of the grille surround.

It rides on newer Hankook tires with clean hubcaps, though the wheels show some scuffs and minor surface pitting.

The engine bay and trunk are well-preserved, reflecting the car’s overall condition relative to its age and mileage.

  • Zustand gesamt:

A road-ready and enjoyable performance car from Peugeot. Fundamentally a well-preserved vehicle, with some details that could be addressed to further enhance its condition.

A beautiful classic and a historically significant enthusiast car, offering both charm and driving pleasure.

Fakten zum Modell

The Peugeot 404 Coupé and Cabriolet were produced in both France and Italy, with manufacturing split between Peugeot in Sochaux and Pininfarina in Turin. The chassis and firewall, originally intended for the 404 Berline, were taken off the production line in Sochaux and transported by rail to Turin. There, the body was assembled and painted, and the glass, trim, and interior were installed, much of it done by hand. The cars were then returned to Sochaux for the installation of the engine, drivetrain, suspension, and mechanical components, followed by final delivery adjustments.

All 404 models were equipped with the same 1,618 cm³ four-cylinder gasoline engine, available with either a standard carburetor or a mechanical fuel injection system by Kugelfischer, known as Injection. This fuel injection system debuted in the 404 Cabriolet in 1962 and was introduced in the Berline and Coupé the following year. At the time, this was an exclusive and technically advanced solution, ensuring optimal air-fuel mixture for each cylinder.

The 1967 model-year engine produced 88 DIN hp (96 SAE hp), delivering strong torque, solid acceleration, and lower fuel consumption. Peugeot also proved the reliability and speed of the Injection engine by winning the Safari Rally three years in a row (1966-1968).

A total of 6,841 units of the 404 Coupé were produced between 1963 and 1968, with 1,358 built in 1967. Only about 75 Coupés were imported to Sweden between 1964 and 1968. Today, 25 of these cars remain, though several are project or donor vehicles, with only 8-10 in drivable condition.

Many Coupés have been used as donor cars for restoring the Cabriolet model. The Cabriolet was produced between 1962 and 1968, with a total of 10,388 units built.

At the time, the 404 Coupé Injection was Peugeot's most expensive model, priced at nearly twice the cost of a Berline, reaching just under 30,000 SEK in Sweden.
