Volvo 242 L B20 — 1975

Sweden’s most common car in 1975 is today extremely rare in such original condition as this example. The fact that it has only ever been used by a father and his son up until now makes it even more exceptional.

"A somewhat rough exterior hides a car that gives a thoroughly solid impression. It starts and runs well as it is, though a technical check-up might still be advisable considering how little it has been driven lately. With relatively little effort, the exterior could be brought to a very presentable condition."

Beschreibung

A Volvo 242 now being sold by the son of the man who bought it new in Stockholm back in 1975. Many two-door models have since been turned into rally cars, and the 1975 model year in particular was especially popular on the used market, as regulations were more lenient up to and including 1975 when it came to tuning or swapping engines. That makes a 1975 242 that has only ever belonged to one family, and that remains unrestored and unmodified, very rare. This is what makes this example highly desirable.

The exterior shows some patina with several touch-ups, but underneath the car is quite solid, with only 175,000 km on the odometer. As it has seen very little use over the past 30 years—and only occasional outings since 2020—a technical inspection would help ensure reliability. Nevertheless, it has recently passed inspection and performed well during the test drive. It has also just received an oil service along with new ignition components.

Although the service book and inspection records could not be found, the car is far from without history, as the seller recalls much about how his father cared for it. It comes with two sets of ignition keys as well as three sets of keys for the doors and trunk. A moving box filled with spare parts is included in the sale, though no winter tires are available.

The Volvo 242 L was the entry-level model of the new 1975 lineup and inherited the reliable B20 engine from the 140 series. The B20 gives it a slightly different engine note compared to most Volvo 240s. Combined with its period-correct color code 116-1 yellow, it doesn’t get much more 1970s than this.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

Starts easily and idles smoothly. The gearbox, brakes, and steering all feel good, and it responds well to throttle input, although under full acceleration it did run a bit unevenly during the test drive. The suspension and chassis also gave a solid impression, with no rattles or other unwanted noises. The warning light for the bulb failure sensor was illuminated, which may be connected to the fact that the hazard lights were not working. Electrical functions such as the cabin fan, windshield wipers, washer system, and radio are all in proper working order.

  • Zustand Interieur:

The interior mainly gives a tidy impression. The driver’s seat upholstery has a small tear, and the glovebox lock is missing. A somewhat newer Blaupunkt Bristol cassette radio is fitted in place with the help of styrofoam. The rear side panels have faded, and the rubber mats are dry and cracked. One of the front rubber mats is a newer type, and one of the rear mats is missing. The nearly indestructible plastic headliner is clean and in good condition. Door seals and window winders are without issue. The trunk gives a good impression and has the correct rubber mat. The spare wheel and jack are present. The center console is missing a plastic cover, and the fuse box cover next to the driver’s door has come loose.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

The body appears straight but the paint, mostly original, is faded and uneven. According to the owner, the sills have been replaced and repainted in recent years. Several touch-ups of rust spots can be seen on the body along with a few minor surface rust areas. The typical rust-prone spots on the 240 series, such as the rear wheel arch edges and the spare wheel wells, are on this car essentially free from rust. The upper rubber trim on the bumpers is missing both front and rear.

  • Zustand gesamt:

The fact that it has only received touch-ups and still retains its original paint makes it a very unusual car, considering the rust issues Volvo had in the mid-1970s. There are a number of touch-ups on the body, yet the areas where the 240 series normally suffers from rust are in good condition on this car. During a test drive, the Volvo ran well and it feels fundamentally sound mechanically.

Kommentar vom Besitzer

"Volvon var min pappas ögonsten som han tog ut i januari 1975, samma år som jag föddes. Han var rädd om den och i många år hade den överdragsklädsel. Pappa var taxichaufför och bytte olja och filter själv och även bromsarna servade han. År 1995 köpte han en Ford Escort och Volvon blev sommarbil. Sedan pappa gick bort år 2020 tog jag över den och jag har bara kört den lite grann på somrarna."

Fakten zum Modell

On August 15, 1974, production of the new 240 series began. It was developed from the 140 series, but the front-end design and the engineering approach behind how it absorbed crash energy to create a safer car came from Volvo’s experimental safety vehicle, the VESC. Daytime running lights were a new feature, as was the front suspension with MacPherson struts instead of double wishbones, and rack-and-pinion steering instead of a recirculating ball system. The front seats were new, as were the mesh-type headrests. Another major innovation was the B21 engine with an aluminum cylinder head and overhead camshaft. However, several model versions retained the proven pushrod B20 engine, among them the 242 L. It was the entry-level model in the lineup, priced in the summer of 1975 at 29,600 kronor.

The two-door model was also the most popular body style, with as many as 53,804 units built for the 1975 model year. The Volvo 240 immediately went straight to number one in Sweden’s car sales statistics. The Volvo 242 became the last major two-door sedan from the Swedish brand. The final examples of the two-door model were built in 1984, and in total 242,621 Volvo 242s were produced. Production of the Volvo 240 continued until May 1993, with a total of 2.86 million 240 and 260 units built.
