Beschreibung

On June 23, 1970, Mrs. Lundin picked up her new car from Axelius Bil AB in Karlstad, a Fiat 850 Special. She indulged in adding fabric upholstery as an option. She used the car sparingly, and in September 1984, her son took over the vehicle. At the inspection in April that year, the car had covered 76,352 kilometers, which means about 5,000 calm kilometers per year. The son drove the car even more sparingly, mostly to keep it running. To maintain the car in good condition, he replaced the front fenders, which had developed some rust at the top. There was also a minor repair in the “spare wheel well.” The car was then repainted in its original color, Fiat Export Verde. At the same time, an underbody treatment was performed.

When the son was over 80 years old, it was decided that the car should be sold. On April 1, 2006, the current owner took over. By then, the odometer had reached 83,905 kilometers. One reason for the purchase was nostalgia; he had bought an identical car new in 1970 and had worked with Fiat, among other things, for many years. The car did not require any major interventions; the daytime running lights were removed, and inner fenders from Lokari were acquired. In the following years, the radiator was renovated, new fabric mats were installed, and in 2009, it received an Abarth exhaust system, an accessory from the era. At the same time, an original accessory steering wheel from Luisi was added, with the flawless original steering wheel included. Additionally, a sport air filter from Dergo was installed for a bit more speed. The following year, a new starter motor, a so-called High Torque with higher torque, was installed. Another accessory on the wish list from the early ’70s was Campagnola magnesium wheels, but they are hard to find and very expensive. When the design patent expired in 2013, a company in Italy started casting these wheels, and a set was quickly acquired.

The next area to focus on was the engine. A very skilled engine restorer for these types of engines was found, who was also the chairman of the Fiat 850 Club in Hungary. The engine was removed at 86,990 kilometers and sent down to Hungary. A couple of visits to Budapest were made to check on the company and how the process was progressing. Everything went according to plan, and the work was very well executed, all documented with over 300 photos provided on a USB stick. Everything is also documented in text. The engine was bored to the first oversize, the cylinder head was converted to run on unleaded fuel, and an electronic ignition from Autobianchi A112 Abarth was installed. The rocker shaft was modified. A larger aluminum oil pan from the 850 Coupé was installed. New pistons and connecting rods were balanced. The flywheel, crankshaft, and clutch were balanced. Additionally, new parts such as the water pump, oil pump, clutch plates, clutch center, camshaft, camshaft drive, valves, and all bearings, seals, and gaskets were replaced.

In April 2014, the owner traveled down to Budapest again to see the engine and the final work, including a bench test. Everything was as it should be, and the engine was sent back to Sweden. After installation, the car “ran as smoothly and gently as I had never experienced in my previous Fiat life.” The mechanical fuel pump was also replaced with an electric low-pressure pump. There is no oil leakage whatsoever. The car has driven about 3,700 kilometers since the engine renovation. The car is inspected, road-ready, and insured under MHRF (Motorhistoriska Riksförbundet).

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

    Starts easily and runs smoothly in both the engine and drivetrain. Everything appears to function well and as it should in terms of steering, brakes, clutch, shifting, etc. The car feels lively and spirited, with a slightly firmer clutch and a louder sound profile than the original, but that’s intentional. It hasn’t been inspected on a lift, but from what could be seen, everything looks good underneath.

  • Zustand Interieur:

    The interior is in excellent original condition with a few upgrades, including a sports steering wheel and textile mats. The seats, rear seat, headliner, door panels, and interior panels are in great shape. There are a couple of minor damages on the rear edges of the driver’s and passenger’s doors. All electrical functions and controls work well, and the dashboard is in fine original condition. The left ventilation window “sticks a bit” but works as it should.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

    The paint is shiny and in great condition with just a few small dents. Other details such as glass, chrome, rubber, plastic, and lighting components are in similarly excellent condition. The wheel arches, door bottoms, sills, etc., are in pristine condition without any signs of rust. The driver’s door sags slightly when open, but a new hinge pin is included. There’s a small mark on the driver’s door, caused by the door blowing open and straining the door stop. The wheels are in like-new condition with excellent Pirelli tires. Both the engine and luggage compartments are in fine condition, clean and dry. The original tools and jack are included.

  • Zustand gesamt:

    A classic little Fiat that has led a calm and quiet life but has now received a boost of energy in its later years. The slightly more refined Special model has been given a touch of sporty ambition – and it suits it well. Regardless, a lively little Fiat, especially in this condition with its history and equipment, is a true classic and enthusiast’s car.??

Fakten zum Modell

Fiat’s response to other countries’ simple people’s cars after World War II was the Fiat 600 model, produced between 1955 and 1969. Designed by the iconic Dante Giacosa, it was the first Fiat model with a rear-mounted engine, a lively little four-cylinder that, unlike, for example, VW, was water-cooled. While not speed demons, they did their job well. With its roots in the 1950s, the design began to feel a bit dated, and by the mid-1960s, it was time for Fiat to modernize the popular class of small rear-engine family cars. This led to the creation of the Fiat 850, produced between 1964 and 1972. It featured both a larger body and engine than its predecessor. Initially available in Normale and Super (S) versions with 34 and 37 hp, respectively, along with some differences in equipment. In February 1968, the Special model was introduced with 47 hp and front disc brakes, the same as the Coupé versions. Production of the Berlina ended in 1971 when its successor, the Fiat 128, was on the way, but this model now had a front-mounted engine. In total, 2,203,308 units of the Berlina versions were produced.
