"Stylish, rare, and highly sought-after – that's how you can describe this car. It's not meticulously restored to a showroom finish where everything is brand new. Instead, the restoration has been done to a balanced level, allowing the car to be used both as an everyday classic and for attending car gatherings. It bears the marks of use and minor imperfections that are typical for a 60-year-old vehicle. This makes it a perfect choice for the average enthusiast or a great starting point for someone looking to restore it to pristine condition."

Beschreibung

This Mercedes Safari is sold new in Sweden, which in itself, is not uncommon. The model was actually developed primarily for the Swedish market. However, what makes it unusual is that it still exists. These highly practical and durable estate wagons were of such good quality that they served their owners for decades, racking up miles upon miles. It wasn't unusual for these cars to cover 500 000 km before finally giving up. Remember, this was a time when 100 000 km was considered a significant distance, and most odometers didn't even go beyond that.

Discovering a well-preserved example like this in the hands of an enthusiast in the rural areas of Värmland feels both unlikely and incredibly exciting. The exact mileage of this particular car is unknown. The odometer currently reads 409 Swedish miles. In 2011, a restoration was initiated on the car. According to the current owner, the car was never in really bad shape. He has pictures of how it looked before the repaint. Once the bodywork was completed, the headliner was replaced with a new one, and new rubber mats were sourced. However, a significant portion of the interior remains original. During our visit to the owner, it became clear that he has a fondness for the Safari model. As he owns several Safaris, he's decided to let this particular one find a new home. The original spare wheel and jack are missing. It comes with two extra fenders and a rear axle with a different gear ratio. Please refer to the owner's comments and separate photos. The car underwent a vehicle inspection on May 27, 2016, and is now exempt from inspection.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

The car starts easily, equipped with quick-glow plugs and a functioning glow plug indicator on the dashboard. The engine runs smoothly and produces the classic diesel clatter of that era. There haven't been any signs of oil leakage observed. The engine is the 200D model, and a floor-mounted gear lever has been installed for the transmission. The original steering column remains in place. (For more information about the drivetrain, refer to the owner's comments.)

  • Zustand Interieur:

Nice interior. The seats in MB-Tex vinyl are original to the car, except for the front seatbacks which have been replaced with ones from a period-correct model. The seatbacks that are currently installed are black instead of the original gray color. The seats still provide good support and comfortable seating.
Other vinyl elements in the door panels and cargo area are original, except for the inside of the tailgate.
There are minor marks on the seats, but nothing that stands out at first glance.
The headliner is new and matches the correct pattern. The white steering wheel is in like-new condition. The rubber floor mats are new and of the correct model.
All instrumentation and controls are functional, with a neat instrument panel, although there is a classic crack in the padding just below the choke lever. (These levers were quite stiff to pull out, and many people used their wrist against the padding on the instrument panel to support themselves when starting the engine.)

  • Zustand Exterieur:

Nice paint job carried out in 2011 that has held up well. There's a minor paint damage on the right rear fender, as well as a small imperfection in the lower part of the left rear door paintwork. See the pictures. The chrome and trim are in good condition. The right side mirror has slightly textured chrome.
Equipped with an American-style roof rack.
The rear bumper is newly manufactured in stainless steel. The front fenders are aftermarket made of fiberglass material. These have a very good fit and are difficult to distinguish from the original. We had to tap them gently to make sure they weren't actually metal. (see the owner's comment) Equipped with rare 15x5.5 inch wheels in the back and 15x5 inch wheels in the front. The rear wheels likely were originally on an ambulance. Also equipped with functioning period-correct Bosch auxiliary lights. There's an old rust damage in the right spare wheel well by the fold into the cargo floor where previous owners have repaired it from the back/underside of the metal, so it's sealed. It could have been done more neatly, but it is effective. See picture.

  • Zustand gesamt:

Attractive car with a positive overall impression. Well-functioning enthusiast's vehicle with some signs of use.

Kommentar vom Besitzer

In 1965, Mercedes-Benz W110 “Heckflosse” (tailfin) received a station wagon version that enjoyed great success on some markets, while others remained almost unknown.

In 1965, the German carmaker had no intention to introduce a station wagon based on its mid-size vehicle. The Belgian company IMA was already specialized in station-wagon conversions and unveiled a modified W110 at the 1965 Brussels Motor Show in January, with the name “Universal.” In August, IMA introduced the series product with an option for an inline-six engine under the hood.

The design was similar to the original W110 model. At the front, it kept the same front fascia with a narrow and tall grille, mounted straight-up in front of the hood. The station wagon carried over its chromed, wrapped-around bumper and the entire front fascia from the W110 “Heckflosse.” Mercedes-Benz liked the idea and offered the converted vehicles in its own network in Germany. It was the same car up to the B-pillar, but its more extended roof and the side windows mounted behind the rear doors were different. In the back, the raked-forward tailgate sported a flat, rectangular rear window.

Inside, the Universal featured a similar cabin, with room for five. The folding rear-seats seatback increased both the trunk size and the loading lengths. At the front, the flat bucket seats offered adequate comfort, while the rear bench was good for up to three people.
