"A pleasant enthusiast car that delivers driving pleasure with a go-kart feel."

Beschreibung

This Triumph has been with its current owner for a full 27 years. When the car was purchased, there were some minor rust spots which were repaired and filled with lead solder. The car was subsequently repainted. The paintwork is today in normal condition with signs of age. In the photographs the paint appears uneven, which is due to remaining wax residue from waxing.

According to the current owner, the engine underwent overhaul before he took over the car. Over the years, the master cylinder and differential have also been replaced, and approximately ten years ago a new hood was fitted. The car comes with a hardtop which has never been used by the current owner, as well as a pair of moulded sports seats with brackets and certain other parts and documentation, see photographs.

The car has primarily been used for drives on winding country roads in Roslagen, often around 100 km at a time when the weather has been at its best. Mileage has been around 1,500–2,000 km per year and the car has always been driven carefully. The engine oil and filter have been changed every autumn before winter storage in a heated garage. The Triumph is furthermore inspected at the mot station and is roadworthy.

The car is easy to start and offers a driving experience often likened to driving a go-kart. Despite the small engine, it has a cheeky engine note and feels lively and willing.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch

Runs well in engine and drivetrain. The engine ticks slightly and may require valve adjustment. Otherwise, the mechanics appear to function as they should.

  • Zustand Interieur

The interior is in worn condition overall, see pictures. The seat upholstery is dry and traces of crumbling from this can be seen under the seats, see pictures.

  • Zustand Exterieur

The paintwork is in acceptable condition with signs of age and use, including some minor scratches, scuffs and small dents, see pictures. There are also a few minor visible rust spots on the inside of the bonnet. Due to remaining wax, the paintwork appears uneven in the photographs. The hood is tight but can be fastened as it should be.

  • Zustand gesamt

A Spitfire in ready-to-drive usable condition that works as it is but would benefit from some attention. A good winter project.

Fakten zum Modell

BMC had demonstrated how to easily build a small and inexpensive sports car based on standard components when they transformed an ordinary Austin A35 into the perky Austin-Healey Sprite. So Triumph was confident they could repeat the success and build a sports car on their new small car Herald. Giovanni Michelotti had created a stylish open bodywork as early as 1957 and since the Herald had a separate frame it was easy to replace the standard bodywork with a sports car body. The engine was tuned with the aid of dual carburettors and in October 1962 production of the Spitfire commenced. To keep the price down the car was simple in its execution, but this was something customers appreciated. Less popular was the difficult-to-master swing axle rear suspension, also an inheritance from the Herald. In a tired family car the rear suspension worked satisfactorily, but with a more powerful engine in the lightweight car it led to severe oversteer and the Spitfire suffered considerable criticism for its handling characteristics during spirited driving. In November 1970 the Mark IV model arrived with a new rear end, a smarter dashboard and, finally, a fully synchromesh gearbox. Most appreciated however was a modified rear suspension, which eliminated the worst of the oversteer.
