Fakten zum Modell
The Admiral was positioned between the more basic Kapitän and the more exclusive Diplomat. The 1970 model year is characterized by an elegant body with distinct American design influences, generous interior space and high comfort. Equipment often included power steering, automatic transmission, tinted windows and abundant chrome trim – features that made the car an appreciated long-distance touring automobile.
Under the bonnet sat a 2.8-litre straight-six CIH engine. It was available in several versions:
132 hp with single carburetor
145 hp with dual carburetors
165 hp in the fuel-injected Admiral E with Bosch D-Jetronic – an advanced solution for its time.
Drive was to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual gearbox or a three-speed automatic. The chassis was engineered for comfortable highway driving and the car offered very smooth handling, which made it popular among business executives, government agencies and long-distance travellers.
When the Kapitän was discontinued already during 1970, the Admiral became the most important six-cylinder model in the KAD series. Despite its qualities, it struggled to compete with Mercedes-Benz and BMW, and sales declined gradually throughout the 1970s. Production continued until 1977, when the model was replaced by the Opel Senator.
Today the Opel Admiral 1970 is a rare and appreciated classic. Well-preserved examples are sought after by collectors owing to their period design, strong six-cylinder engine and high comfort. In Sweden the model is relatively scarce, which makes fine original cars particularly interesting on the classic car market.
