"A great project for anyone looking to complete a Sonett III. Needs a registration inspection to be entered into the Swedish vehicle registry. It is not necessary to fully restore the car; it can be fun to drive it in its current condition. We have not attempted to start it; the fuel tank must be drained and cleaned first."

Beschreibung

Bilweb Auctions has been entrusted with selling the cars from the collection at Saab Memorial Hall, Sweden's most charming little Saab museum. The museum was founded by Norwegian Tron Bach, who moved to Sweden in 2011. After a busy career as a hotel owner, Tron relocated to a small farm in Gullsjö, Vännäs. When he discovered a worn and dented Saab 92 behind a shed, the idea began to take shape. He decided to start a Saab museum to honor Saab's Swedish cultural heritage—a car admired worldwide. Over the years the museum has been open, more than 1,000 visitors have come to this small Northern Swedish village to see the Saab museum. Tron feels that, with age, it is time to close his museum on a high note.

The museum will close around the time of the auction. Until then, we recommend a visit. For more information, visit Saab Memorial Hall.

At this auction, there are several cars we have not been able to remove from the premises. To do so, one of the walls must be demolished. This will be done at the closure so buyers can collect their cars.

About the Car:

This Sonett is one of the vehicles we could not roll out from the museum. The car was sold new in the USA and imported to Sweden. Only sold to Swedish buyers due to the registration procedure.

Former rally champion and Saab enthusiast Sture Karlsson, who has served as the museum's chief mechanic, inspected the Sonett before it was put on display in 2019. He serviced the braking system, the car, and installed a new exhaust system. During this process, the car was test-driven for about 40 km without any issues. See the separate image with a handwritten note detailing the tasks performed. The fuel system now needs cleaning (see the video for more information). Along with this, a general inspection is recommended before the registration inspection.

A total of 10,236 Saab 97s, i.e., Sonett II and III, were produced. The majority of Sonetts were exported, and according to the Saab Sonett Club, there are now just over 300 cars of the different model variants left in Sweden.

NOTE! REGISTRATION in Sweden: The car was sold new in the USA and imported to Sweden in 2014. It is not registered in Sweden. The car is registered for an initial inspection for registration (documents available). A Swedish buyer will receive a power of attorney from the importer to conduct the registration inspection in their name. The buyer will perform the registration inspection themselves using this power of attorney. The importer will be the first registered owner in the vehicle registry. Only after this is completed can the car be transferred to the auction buyer. Foreign buyers can request the original documents back from the Swedish Transport Agency (US Title and customs documents, etc.) to register the car in their own country.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

Equipped with a 1.7L V4 engine with a rated output of 65 hp, and a 4-speed manual transmission with freewheel. It was running well when it was put into the museum in 2019. At that time, the brakes were refurbished with a new master brake cylinder, etc., and the ignition system was serviced. It has been off the road since then. It was not started during the photography session. The fuel system needs to be drained of old fuel and the tank cleaned before attempting to start. It is missing a start battery, and no functions have been tested by BWA.

  • Zustand Interieur:

The seats were renovated in 2019 with the correct materials and are in excellent condition. The headliner is sagging and the upholstery on the side panels is worn. Some upholstery and the floor mat are missing.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

The fiberglass body is in good condition with no major damage. There are a few minor marks, including one on the hood and a crack on the left rear near the bumper. See pictures. New headlights for the grille are included separately, but the mounts for them are missing.

  • Zustand gesamt:

Gives a good overall impression. Efforts to restore the car have begun with renovated seats and an overhauled brake system, etc., making it possible to get it back on the road with a reasonable amount of work.

Kommentar vom Besitzer

The Saab Sonett was introduced in 1956 and developed in several versions, sharing technology with contemporary Saab models.

In 1970, the car was modified significantly and received the name Sonett III. The body was heavily altered with a new front and rear, leaving only the middle section relatively untouched. The flip-front, similar to the Triumph Spitfire, was replaced with a wedge-shaped front featuring a small engine hood and "pop-up" headlights. At the rear, the trunk was made more user-friendly with an opening rear window. Inside, a new dashboard with instruments from the Saab 99 was introduced, along with a floor-mounted gear lever. The Saab Sonett was manufactured by ASJ workshops in Arlöv, near Malmö. Production ended in 1974 when stricter emissions regulations for passenger cars were introduced by U.S. authorities.

A total of 10,236 Saab 97s, comprising Sonett II and III models, were produced. The majority of Sonetts were exported, and according to the Saab Sonett Club, just over 300 cars of various model variants remain in Sweden today.
