SAAB 99 EMS — 1978

The Saab 99 EMS was Saab's most expensive and sporty model from 1972 to 1978. It was also the fastest Saab of its time and is now significantly rarer than the subsequent Saab 99 Turbo.

Beschreibung

Bilweb Auctions has been entrusted with selling the vehicles that were part of the collection at Saab Memorial Hall, Sweden’s most charming small Saab museum. It was founded by Norwegian Tron Bach, who moved to Sweden in 2011. After a busy life as a hotel owner, Tron settled on a small farm in Gullsjö, Vännäs. When he found a worn and dented Saab 92 behind a shed, the idea took shape. He decided to start a Saab museum to honor Saab’s Swedish cultural heritage—a car admired worldwide. Over the years the museum has been open, more than 1,000 visitors have come to this small northern Swedish town to visit the Saab museum. Tron feels that, given his age, it’s time to close his museum on a high note.

The museum will close in time for the auction. Until then, we recommend a visit. For more information, please visit Saab Memorial Hall.

Several vehicles in this auction could not be removed from the premises. To do so, one of the walls must be demolished. This will be done at the closing, so buyers can retrieve their cars. Please note that these vehicles have been off the road for a long time. This means that they may require more work to bring them up to standard compared to similar models that have been driven continuously.

About the Car:

This Saab 99 is a very special model, specifically the EMS, which stands for Electronic-Manual-Special. It featured electronic fuel injection, metallic paint, the most stylish aluminum wheels, a sunroof, and sporty interior. This particular example was retrieved from Saab collector Birger Matsson, where it had been left outside in the bushes for 15 years. Saab Memorial Hall’s resident mechanic Ture inspected the car in 2015, allowing it to start and be driven into the museum under its own power.

Despite being stored outdoors for a long time before joining the museum collection, the interior has survived remarkably well. The sunroof also operates smoothly. We consider it an exciting project car. The original spare wheel is included.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

Straight four-cylinder engine with overhead chain-driven camshaft, two valves per cylinder. Electronic-Manual-Special, fuel injection with a rated power of 118 hp. Four-speed gearbox.

The car was last driven in 2015 and has not been started since. The brakes are sticking. Missing a start battery; no technical functions have been tested by BWA.

  • Zustand Interieur:

Equipped with the unique interior found only in EMS and Turbo models. It has aged remarkably well. There is a split seam on the driver’s seat backrest. The floor mat is in good condition, and the headlining is sagging. The distinctive leather steering wheel is in good shape. Features a tachometer and a speedometer calibrated up to 200 km/h.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

It is evident that the car was previously stored outdoors under less than ideal conditions. There are scratches, surface rust, and minor dents. There is a hole near one of the rear wheel arches. It is equipped with the distinctive “football” aluminum wheels, including the spare wheel. The windshield is damaged. We had difficulty accessing the underside for inspection. We observed significant surface rust, but did not tap it with a hammer. Please see the photos.

  • Zustand gesamt:

Complete EMS project car with noted issues primarily related to rust. Most of the unique and hard-to-find EMS equipment remains intact.

Kommentar vom Besitzer

In 1972, Saab introduced a new, in-house designed 2-liter engine. That year, in January, the sportier 99 EMS variant was launched, featuring the new 2-liter engine, firmer suspension, alloy wheels, a black plastic grille, a leather steering wheel, and a tachometer. The 1972 EMS was only available in copper metallic. Although the Saab Turbo was on the horizon in 1978, the EMS remained one of the coolest Swedish-made vehicles you could park in your driveway. Today, a well-maintained, low-mileage EMS is likely even harder to find than its turbocharged sibling.
