"Immensely popular among young riders when new, it is now a natural part of Sweden’s rolling cultural heritage. This example feels genuine both in appearance and condition. We have not had the opportunity to test ride the motorcycle. It was last started in 2009. With its simple and straightforward engineering, we believe it should be possible to get it running again with relatively modest effort. Perfect for nostalgic, grown-up enthusiasts looking to acquire their dream bike from the past. And if riding isn’t the goal, it works just as well as a piece of art."

Beschreibung

The current owner inherited the motorcycle from his father, a well-known entrepreneur and car enthusiast who owned several collector vehicles. The bike has been part of the family’s collection since 1986.

It has seen very little use over the past 40 years, with the exception of the period between 2006 and 2009. It was brought out in 2006 and prepared for registration inspection. During the following years up to 2009, the motorcycle covered 480 km, which can be verified through inspection records. In 2009, it was taken off the road again and has remained untouched until now.

The current odometer reading is 1,010 km. The total mileage since new is unknown. The heirs have decided to sell the motorcycle and hope it will go to someone who appreciates vintage motorcycles.

In Sweden, this Husqvarna falls under the regulations for classic vehicles over 40 years old. This means it will become exempt from periodic inspections and road tax after its next approved inspection. The last approved inspection was carried out in 2009, so it will need one final inspection before being put back into use.

This is a distance auction. The images and information about the motorcycle and its technical condition have been provided by the owner. BWA has therefore not inspected the vehicle on site.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch

The motorcycle has not been started since 2009. The current owner inherited it and has not attempted to start it. It will therefore require a full inspection, including checking the ignition system and cleaning the carburetor, before any start attempt is made. This will need to be handled by the buyer.
    The engine is a single-cylinder two-stroke and runs on a petrol/oil mixture.

  • Zustand Exterieur

The motorcycle has been stored in a collection and is dusty. It appears well preserved in the photos. We do not know exactly what has been done to it or to what extent it has been restored, if at all. Please study the photos carefully to form your own impression of the condition.

The tires are old, and you should expect that they will need to be replaced if the motorcycle is to be used on the road. There is damage and some paint loss on the top of the fuel tank. You should also expect a few other imperfections after many years of storage.

  • Zustand gesamt

A classic 175 cc Husqvarna that has been part of a collection for many years. It appears to have weathered storage well. In need of some servicing if you intend to ride it. As a collector’s item, a simple clean and polish will suffice.

Fakten zum Modell

Husqvarna introduced the Silverpilen in 1955, and it was a clever way to take advantage of the legislation at the time for lightweight motorcycles, creating a fast bike aimed at young riders. Husqvarna based it on their existing 175 cc engine, previously used in a heavier motorcycle model. The engine was lightened with an aluminum cylinder and mounted in a lightweight tubular frame.
To be ridden by a 16-year-old with a motorcycle license, the bike had to weigh no more than 75 kg. Once the rider turned 18, the same license automatically allowed them to ride heavier motorcycles. It wasn’t until 1970 that regulations changed to focus on engine size instead—at which point a lightweight motorcycle was limited to a maximum displacement of 125 cc.
The Silverpilen was designed by Sixten Sason, who had previously worked with Husqvarna. It became very popular and caused concern for competitor Monark. Their Blue Top Fighter had a smaller engine and a top speed of 98 km/h, while the Silverpilen managed 100 km/h—something that did not go unnoticed by 16-year-olds at the time.
This setback pushed Monark to respond, and in 1957 they introduced the world’s first 200 cc motorcycle under 75 kg—the Monark M112, known as the “Blue Sting”—with a top speed of 115 km/h.
However, this race for performance came at a cost. Manufacturers were forced to use increasingly lightweight materials in the frames, and braking performance suffered. Accidents soon followed, prompting authorities to take action.
When the new law came into effect in 1970, older lightweight motorcycles with engines over 125 cc were reclassified as heavy motorcycles—including the Silverpilen. Soon after, new Japanese 125 cc bikes arrived on the scene, offering even higher performance—but that is another story.
