"A calm and relaxing driving experience in today’s traffic, accompanied by the thought of how a well-preserved everyday car from that era stands as an important cultural marker. Simply put, a car that has lived a rich automotive life."

Beschreibung

It was delivered in March 1948, complete with well-preserved paperwork from the GM dealer Automobilfirman Bröderna Karlge in Vänersborg to its first owner, Gustav Benjaminsson from Herrestad outside Uddevalla. The contract, invoices, receipts, and all other documents typical of a car purchase at the time are included — all neatly collected in a binder, preserving everything related to the vehicle.

Among the documents are four typewritten pages from the Swedish Forest Agency (Domänverket), titled "Instructions for Drivers of Passenger Cars During His Majesty the King's Moose Hunt in the Crown Park Halle-Hunneberg, September 27–28, 1948." This car was, in fact, the King's vehicle during that hunt, with Gustav Benjaminsson as the driver. The documents detail logistics such as pick-ups at Lilleskog railway station and transportation to various drives and shooting posts, for example:
"1:10 PM: Departure from Fagerhult to the Högsäter drive. The King’s car proceeds to shooting screen no. 9. Other cars proceed to the power line or turnoff before it. During the drive, all cars are parked at Högsäter. Cars follow the drive chain at a safe distance. After the drive ends at 2:30 PM, hunters are picked up where they were dropped off. Then departure to the Kollida drive. The King’s car proceeds to shooting screen no. 11."

In its early years, this family car also served as a taxi and dignitary vehicle. It even helped out as a towing car, pulling a dolly trailer to recover vehicles for Gustav Benjaminsson’s repair shop. The car has had periods of rest and inactivity over the years, but in the early 2010s, Lennart took it under his wing and restored it to the condition it's in today.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

The overhead valve inline-six ticks quietly, and the gears slide in with an oddly effortless motion — no need for double-clutching.
A fuel primer bulb, borrowed from the marine world, solves the issue of getting fuel to the carburetor for smoother starts. Additionally, the carburetor is fitted with a custom-made overflow guard underneath to prevent fuel from spilling onto the exhaust manifold and thus avoid the risk of a carburetor or engine fire.

  • Zustand Interieur:

Well-preserved and beautiful, with many vintage details to admire and get lost in. The bench seats, headliner, door panels, and carpets are all fresh and in great condition.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

The cellulose paint has been polished to a glossy shine. The car was originally dark blue, later painted black, then blue again, and today sports a stylish two-tone dark blue finish with roof pillars and roof in a light yellow shade.

Former woodworking teacher and car painter Lennart admits he’s not entirely sure how many times the car has been repainted over the years — but he’s certainly pleased with the latest result.

One noteworthy detail is that the entire car was galvanized by Gustav Benjaminsson himself. Exactly how it was done remains a mystery to Lennart (his son and the current owner), but he does know just how difficult it is to get paint to properly adhere to galvanized metal.

  • Zustand gesamt:

As the new owner of a nearly eighty-year-old rolling, active, and well-documented cultural treasure in wonderfully fine and usable condition, one takes on a responsibility — a responsibility of care: to continue driving, documenting, and preserving it for the future.

Fakten zum Modell

The Chevrolet Stylemaster was Chevrolet’s entry-level model between 1946 and 1948, and the Stylemaster Sport Sedan was a four-door sedan that, at the time, offered style, comfort, and reliability at an affordable price. It was aimed at the average American car buyer who, after the end of World War II, was eager to return to a normal life — and that included a car for the whole family.

The 1947 model was largely unchanged from 1946, which was common at the time as car production had to be quickly resumed after the war. The design was streamlined with rounded shapes, a wide chrome grille, and classic rear fenders that protruded — a clear hallmark of 1940s automotive aesthetics.

Under the hood was a 216-cubic-inch (3.5-liter) inline-six engine, known as the Stovebolt Six, delivering around 90 horsepower to a three-speed manual transmission. Simple yet reliable technology that was easy to maintain.

The interior was relatively spartan, but for its time, considered both spacious and comfortable. Cloth-covered bench seats, a classic steering wheel with chrome details, and a basic instrument panel still conveyed a sense of timeless dignity.

A Stylemaster represents an era when cars became part of the American Dream. It wasn’t a luxury vehicle, but it was accessible, dependable, and symbolized a new beginning after the war years.
