"A classic of Sweden’s “folkhem” era, perfectly at home in a suburban neighborhood—here with a family that chose a car with GT ambitions. Finished in red with a black interior, and equipped with period features such as a Blaupunkt car radio, warming lambswool seat covers, and the traditional checkered blanket in the rear. Both the surroundings and the property, with its double garage and the Amazon parked in the driveway, are clear markers of the 1960s.

The top-of-the-line Volvo 123 GT is just as appealing today as it was back then—a true centerpiece on any driveway."

Beschreibung

This car was first registered for road use on November 22, 1966. The first owner was Mr. Bror Ingmarsson in Östhammar. He invested in a sporty red 123 GT, but drove it relatively gently and sparingly for just under a year on the left-hand side of the road—before it was time to switch to driving on the right.

After two more owners within the same family and in the same town, the current owner became the fourth in line in November 1999. During its time in Östhammar, it had received new front fenders and replacement side mirrors. Under the current ownership, further rust repairs and general refurbishment were carried out over several years, including a full overhaul of the brakes. The carburetors were also rebuilt and adjusted, and some relays were replaced. The car was fitted with a Simonez 2-inch sports exhaust system.

Just over ten years ago, the restoration was completed with a repaint in the original color, rustproofing treatment, and reassembly. Since then, the car has been used sparingly as an enthusiast vehicle for shows and gatherings. The odometer currently reads 6,552 miles (Swedish mil), and it has rolled over once, meaning the total distance since new is 16,552 mil (approximately 165,520 km).

The car comes with original documentation, including the owner’s manual, service booklet, and two sets of keys. Inspection records and various receipts support the mileage and history. The car is inspected and ready to drive.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch

Starts easily, and the engine runs smoothly and quietly. During a short test drive in a residential area, everything appeared to function well, including steering, brakes, road holding, as well as the clutch and gearbox with overdrive.

Not inspected on a lift, but what could be seen looked good in terms of vital components, and there were no remarks at the vehicle inspection.

  • Zustand Interieur

Original interior with good comfort in both the front seats and rear bench. Nice door panels, trim, headliner, and rubber mats. Steering wheel, controls, and gauges are original and in good working condition. All key GT features are present. The fuel gauge function is somewhat uncertain. The dashboard is intact and in good condition, with no cracks. Period-correct Blaupunkt radio in working order. Equipped with retractable seat belts.

  • Zustand Exterieur

Nice and glossy paintwork following a respray just over ten years ago. Chrome, trim, glass, and lighting details are in fine original condition. All key GT features remain, except for the fender-mounted mirrors, which are missing.

The car has attractive wheels fitted with newer Hankook tires. The engine bay and trunk are in good original condition. Some relays have been replaced.

  • Zustand gesamt

A dream car for many Volvo enthusiasts from the latter half of the 1960s. Here in a user-friendly condition, equally attractive inside and out, and in technically sound working order. All 123 GT features are present and in good condition, except for the mirrors—but these are readily available.

Driving around in this red GT gem and attending meets and events brings joy and a sense of nostalgia, both for those inside the car and for onlookers. A true enthusiast’s vehicle from Volvo and the vibrant 1960s.

Fakten zum Modell

Volumes have been written about the Amazon, one of Sweden’s most beloved classic cars. Designed by Jan Wilsgaard with Italian influences, it was Volvo’s answer to the so-called ponton body style that became a hallmark of the 1950s. It was produced from 1956 to 1970, covering model years 1957–1970. The 1959 model was the world’s first mass-produced car to feature three-point seatbelts in the front as standard.

The bulletproof B18 engine, producing 75 hp, was introduced for the 1962 model year. For 1965, several updates were made, including a new grille, new seats and interior, as well as so-called “vented” wheels and new hubcaps.

When Volvo introduced the Amazon 123 GT in 1967, it was aimed at those who couldn’t afford a 1800S—or who perhaps wanted a more practical yet sporty car. The new GT was based on the two-door Amazon and featured the same four-speed gearbox with overdrive.

The 123 GT was equipped with features such as dual fender-mounted mirrors, Hella fog and auxiliary lights, trim rings, a tachometer on the dashboard, a three-spoke sports steering wheel, radial tires, high-tone horns, chrome folding fittings, and lighting in both the engine bay and trunk.

The 123 GT was undoubtedly the most expensive Amazon. In 1967, when the cheapest Favorit model with a three-speed gearbox cost 15,300 SEK, a 123 GT was priced at a full 18,800 SEK.

For the 1969 model year, an even larger engine was introduced—the 2.0-liter B20A producing 82 hp (DIN) in the standard 121 model. Improved and safer brakes were added, along with several upgrades from the 140 series, but also some simplifications, such as the removal of chrome drip moldings and hood trim. There were no major changes or development steps in the final years of production. New colors were introduced in 1969 as well, such as medium blue/“Mediterranean blue” from the 140 series.

With the arrival of the 1970s, the Amazon was retired after 14 model years and 667,332 units produced. Available in two-, four-, and five-door versions, and ranging from standard models to sport and GT variants, it remains a true icon in Swedish automotive history.
