"A road-ready Italian with a condition beyond the ordinary."

Beschreibung

The Piaggio Vespa 50 hails from Italy and was first introduced in 1963. After hundreds of thousands were produced between 1963 and 1982, the model transitioned to a more modern version, which, among other updates, featured an automatic transmission.

This particular Vespa is a 1970 50L model—a slightly more luxurious version equipped with aluminum foot strips, a chrome headlight rim, and a “Vespa 50L” badge on the rear fender. It was originally sold by Stolts Cykel och Mopedaffär in Sandviken in 1972. The current owner purchased it in Storvik in 2018, and the restoration was completed in 2019.

The frame was sandblasted, primed with 2K epoxy primer, and painted in the original color, PIA 802 Monza Red. The engine was also rebuilt and has been given a small “weight adjustment,” allowing it to reach around 40 km/h. The Vespa now rides on 10-inch wheels instead of the original 9-inch ones, improving both its appearance and stability, as well as giving it a slight speed boost.

In Italy and many other European countries, the engines were allowed to produce more power and could legally reach speeds of up to 60 km/h.

Included with the Vespa are the original warranty card, type certificate, and owner’s manual—documents that are rarely preserved, making them a noteworthy addition.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

Performs and behaves just as a fully restored Vespa should. It’s as close to brand new as you can get.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

Very nice repaint in a highly appealing shade of red. Chrome, rims, and other details are also in excellent condition. New tires with good tread depth.

  • Zustand gesamt:

A Piaggio in very nice, ready-to-ride condition. A moped for those looking to shine this summer.

Fakten zum Modell

The background of the Vespa begins with Piaggio being forced to abandon aircraft manufacturing after World War II. A new line of production was needed to replace it. Enrico Piaggio had, early on, recognized the need for a cheap and simple means of transportation in a Europe undergoing reconstruction.

The first Vespa, the Vespa 98, was launched in 1946. It had a 98cc engine and a top speed of around 60 km/h. It was designed by Corradino D’Ascanio at the request of Enrico Piaggio. The goal was to create something simple, economical, and easy to ride. D’Ascanio had previously worked as a consultant on scooter design and manufacturing for Ferdinando Innocenti. An initial prototype was developed by Renzo Spolti and Vittorio Casini and was nicknamed Paperino (Italian for Donald Duck).

The Vespa got its name because of its shape, with a wider rear section. When Enrico Piaggio first saw it, he exclaimed, "Sembra una vespa!" – “It looks like a wasp!” – and the name stuck.

Vespa production began in 1946, with 2,484 units leaving the factory. By 1948, 19,822 Vespas were produced. Production quickly expanded, and within a few years, Vespa was being sold in 114 countries and manufactured in 13 of them.
