MG MGB GT Modsport/Super Saloon/Special Saloon — 1970

In a small racing world, a somewhat legendary racer with purebred roots in England—later slowly refined and transformed with clever expertise, premium materials, and exclusive parts, primarily from Sweden. Three components from the original remain intact.

"Nostalgic and technically appealing to those on the racing scene who have seen it compete, raced against it, and perhaps most of all, raced with and against the driver in the raw MG."

Beschreibung

It began its life as a standard MGB GT and hasn’t ended as a race car—it’s simply paused for a while. This is a car that was continuously built and developed by Ola Johansson from Finspång, and it competed in the Modsport, Special Saloon, and Super Saloon classes during the 1980s and ’90s. In its latest incarnation, Ola drove it right up until 2008.

Even though it hasn’t been road-registered since 1988—and never will be again—it still retains its registration, with all ownership changes documented. Included with the car is a binder full of start lists, result sheets, race logbooks, newspaper clippings, and other historic documentation.

The only original components left from the base car are the roof, clutch master cylinder, and steering rack. This car is just as much about its driver/builder/owner Ola Johansson as it is about its racing history. The buyer will receive contact details for Ola’s mechanic and longtime collaborator in the car’s development. Staying in touch with him is crucial for the health and future operation of the engine, especially after a long period of inactivity. Following this advice is strongly recommended for the next owner.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

The engine is fundamentally a Volvo B230. A Farndon Racing crankshaft with a longer stroke increases the total displacement to 2,640 cm³. Porsche specialist Jaan Tolli sourced Mahle pistons from Porsche’s development division, which are connected to connecting rods from the internationally renowned Swedish manufacturer AutoVerdi. The flywheel, pulleys, and dry sump system are all custom-built components. The intake system, featuring a slide-throttle body, is a replicated design based on a Hart Formula 2 engine.

The cylinder head—a Volvo 16V—has been modified by Kenneths Motor in Motala, using custom cams and setup. According to dyno test documentation, the engine produces just over 350 horsepower.

Brakes are from Porsche all around—928 up front and 911 at the rear. The transmission is a Getrag Volvo Group A unit paired with a magnesium bellhousing from Volvo Motorsport. The car most likely also features a Volvo Motorsport aluminum differential.

For the right buyer, the Volvo Motorsport components alone could be worth the equivalent of the car’s reserve price—which will become evident when someone places a bid at or above that level.

  • Zustand Interieur:

Functional and slightly worn race interior—this isn’t about fine finishes. Documentation for the roll cage is included in the binder. The seat and harness are too old to be eligible for racing use today.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

The car is built on a tubular space frame, and the molds for the body panels are included. It was once painted blue, and the entire front end is removable as a single piece—just like the rear wing and trunk lid, which are also one unit. At the front of the roof, there are lift and tow hooks attached to the roll cage, used both for recovery and for hoisting the car in the workshop.

It previously ran on 18" BBS wheels fitted with slicks, but unfortunately, those wheels were kept by the previous owner. The car now sits on 17" BBS wheels with rain tires.

  • Zustand gesamt:

A race-retired racer that surely still has plenty to give—as a fun track day car, a time attack build, or an enthusiastic contender in club-level racing. And perhaps even a return to its old class, Modsport, in the Swedish Sportscar Series.
