Saab 96 V4 — 1980

A nicely and solidly renovated 96 from the last year of production. Largely in original specification but with some snazzier attributes, such as; Weber carburetor, bolt pattern from the 99, leather steering wheel, Bosch auxiliary lights, and more.

"Close your eyes and think of a Saab. Most who were around during the days of Hyland's corner, Swedish sin, and bag soup will say Saab 96. The epitome of a Sweden in forward-leaning change but with a safe and familiar vehicle from Trollhättan as a companion. Here in a bright red version with the styling of the last years of production, which has now undergone a significant facelift. With sporty upgrades and ambitions, it's once again ready to stretch out on the country roads. Here awaits a treat for both ears and eyes."

Beschreibung

This vehicle seems to have rolled and had five owners in Östergötland over the years. A few years ago, a renovation was started, where the body was cleaned and rust repaired, and the undercarriage was treated with Tectyl. The entire car was painted in the original Cinnabar Red color.

The engine has been updated with planed tops, valve seats, and valves (compatible with 95 octane) New Weber carburetor with manual choke, breakerless ignition system, and new fuel and water pumps. New 2-inch exhaust system, Saab original. The gearbox has a new clutch disc and pressure plate, release bearing, and new oil.

Rebuilt with the 99's four-hole bolt pattern. The front discs are turned with new pads, the rear is all original. Newly turned "soccer ball rims," and a set of GB rims is also included.

The windshield is new, the front seats are reupholstered, original in the rear seat. The door sides got new upholstery with a new surface layer, carpets are in original condition. Turn signal glasses front and rear lights are new, as are splash guards.

The odometer reads 4,264 miles, and it has most likely rolled over once.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

Starts easily and runs smoothly, briskly, and steadily. Much is new and replaced, which is why most things appear to be in very good condition. After renovation, there may be details that need fine-tuning.

  • Zustand Interieur:

Nice and pleasant interior where the front seats have received new upholstery, as well as the door sides. Fine headliner and rear seat as well as carpets in good original condition. Good rubber seals. The parcel shelf is black lacquered. Everything appears to work well, and the leather steering wheel is comfortable to grip.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

Newly painted. Glass, rubber, and shiny details in fine condition. Some dents and running on the lower edge of the tailgate. New lamp glasses front and back. Renovated rims with newer tires.

  • Zustand gesamt:

As the Saab 96 approached its Final Countdown in the late 70s and early 80s, after 20 years of production, some styling tricks were employed to give sales of "the old one" a boost. Special colors, stripes, rims, etc., were part of this effort. If they are also in a nice and renovated condition with accessories from the time, like this fiery red one, they are today sought-after enthusiast vehicles and hot classics.

Fakten zum Modell

The automotive business within SAAB was founded in 1947, and the first model, the Saab 92, had borrowed some design elements from the aviation industry. As the model 92 eventually evolved through various stages, becoming the model 96 starting from the model year 1960, one could see influences from the 1940s while transitioning into the 1960s with the 96. When SAAB launched the new 99 and later the 900, many believed that it was the end for the 96. However, like the Phoenix rising from the ashes, new updates came over the years, and it persisted until the 1980s.

As with the past, there were steady changes, both major and minor, so that when it was all said and done, one could place an early 92 next to an 80s model and see that not a single part was the same, yet there was still a clear family resemblance.

For the 1978 models, the epithet and model designation became the Saab 96 GL, featuring larger parking and turn signal lights at the front. The taillights also grew in size and now included built-in reverse lights. The rear hatch received a spoiler-like handle. Already towards the end of the production of the 1977 model year, the 96 received a new two-stage carburetor that increased power to 68 horsepower, which was reflected in the 1978 model year with the additional designation "V4 Super" on the rear hatch. The following year, 1979, all 96s were built in Finland. They received black-framed windows, a black stripe under the side moldings, and a black-painted panel between the taillights. The new sought-after color was the acacia green metallic.

In January 1980, it was the final chapter and the end of the 96 era. The last car to leave the assembly line, on January 8, was driven by Erik Carlsson to the SAAB Museum in Trollhättan. The last cars were sold during the spring of 1980, with only 967 units registered in Sweden.

According to reports, a total of 547,221 units of the 96 were manufactured.
