Pontiac Bonneville 389 — 1959

Pontiac's Wide-Track chassis debuted for the 1959 model year, and the Bonneville was updated with quad headlamps, sloping chrome trim on the sides, and twin-fin rear quarter panels. Equipped with a V8 389 engine with a Hydramatic four-speed automatic gearbox.

Beschreibung

Acquired from Mrs. Stickler in Phoenix, Arizona, this vehicle was imported to Sweden in 2000. Following its importation, it underwent comprehensive registration and inspection in May of the same year. In July 2000, it was purchased by a museum, where it has been showcased for the past 24 years. It is presumed that during its tenure at the museum, the car underwent partial repainting and interior renovations.

The car comes from the Sandahl collections, which Bilweb Auctions AB will sell in the early spring under four different themes; first out are some of the family's popular workhorses, mainly Mercedes, Volkswagen, and a joker, then half a dozen exclusive fine Rolls-Royce and Jaguar, followed by a selection of early Ford cars and a Chevrolet from the childhood and youth of motoring. The last will be 7 USA cars, of which 5 are representative full-size USA cars from GM's 1959 models, the year when the fins were at their largest. Sandahls is today one of Sweden's largest family-owned transport conglomerates. The company was founded in Värnamo in 1949. Older generations have in their private museum for many years collected about 40 cars under various themes. Bilweb Auctions AB has now been tasked with selling these over four rounds in February, March, and April this year.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

    After a recent start up service and check-up, the car is up and running, with a smooth sounding engine and easy gear shift. The brakes, including new front rubber hoses, have been checked to make sure the car stops properly, but they'll require further work. The engine and its compartment is neat and clean and also the AC works. Nice wheels and good older tires. Last inspected in 2002-05-31

  • Zustand Interieur:

    Interior is well-maintained, featuring very nice tri color bench seats without any damage, as well as the door cards, headliner, and carpets. The dashboard and gauges are also in good condition, including an original radio that powers on but does not function and extra fitted AC unit blows cold air.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

    The car's bodywork and underbody are in great shape, with no damages, dents, or rust. The paintwork is clean and presentable but has been partily repaint in the following Upper front wing passenger side, Rear panel above the boot, Drivers side wing and rear upper wing. The chrome work on the car is also shiny and clean and undamaged with a slight differnt colour shade. The car would look better with a polish.

  • Zustand gesamt:

    This car stands out with its presentable condition, featuring a wonderful interior, no rust problems, and bright chrome detailing throughout. It operates smoothly and would benefit greatly from a thorough polish to elevate its appearance even more. Additionally, a detailed review is necessary to prepare it for its final inspection.

Fakten zum Modell

In 1959, General Motors embarked on a significant overhaul of its vehicle designs, with Pontiac leading the charge under the guidance of General Manager Semon 'Bunkie' Knudsen, alongside engineers Pete Estes and John DeLorean. This team was instrumental in steering Pontiac towards a performance-oriented image, a strategy that began in 1956 with incremental increases in engine size. This initiative culminated in the introduction of the Tempest 420 engine in 1959. The 1959 Pontiac models were enhanced with the option of a 4-speed Hydra-Matic transmission. Their design featured sharp fins culminating in a V above the tail lights, and the adoption of a 'Wide Track' stance, achieved by extending the front and rear dimensions by over four inches, which pushed the wheels towards the car's extremities for a more planted appearance. Notable design elements included a slender chrome strip curving towards the rear wheelhouse, a distinctive split grille with quad headlights, and a completely horizontal beltline. This year marked the debut of Pontiac's iconic split grille, a design element that remained synonymous with the brand for the next six decades. In line with GM's design evolution, the roofs of these cars were made thinner and flatter, complemented by a sweeping panoramic windshield that blended into the roofline. Tri-Power models boasted specific emblems on their front quarter panels, while Bonneville variants featured Bonneville-script logos in a striking gold-tone metallic finish. Although Pontiac introduced several optional features to attract buyers, Bonnevilles were equipped with numerous standard amenities, highlighting their premium status.
