"This car was essentially given a blank check when it came to the renovation, with no expense spared. At the same time, care was taken to preserve its original look and feel—avoiding an over-restored appearance. The result is a truly well-balanced and attractive car in every aspect."

Beschreibung

This is a Swedish-sold car with documented early history from the state archives, showing it spent many years in the Gothenburg area until the mid-1970s, after which it was located in southern Sweden. The current owner purchased the car in late 2016. While it was running at the time, it required bodywork repairs. After a few years, the decision was made to carry out a full renovation, with the help of local specialists and workshops in and around Småland.

When asked about the total cost, the owner hesitates—“more than 300,000 SEK, but not over 400,000,” including the purchase of the car. This means the next owner is getting genuine value for money, as virtually every major component has been renovated or rebuilt, including:

Fully rebuilt engine, gearbox with overdrive, and rear axle
Fuel system, electrics, brakes, and suspension
Bodywork stripped to bare metal; front wings, front panels and sills replaced other panels realigned and repaired
Full professional repaint in Cherry Red (code 46)
Underside sealed and protected
According to the owner, “a lot more was done, hard to even remember everything.”

As the renovation neared completion, a custom hand-stitched leather interior was commissioned—including seats, door panels, dash, and side trims—paired with new carpets and a headliner. The interior now arguably looks better than when the car was new.

The restoration was completed and the car passed its final inspection in 2022, meaning it is now inspection-exempt for life. When asked how much the car has been driven since completion, the owner simply points to the trip meter: just 321 km.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

Since the car has only been driven just over 300 km in the past three years, it’s essentially just run in. It starts instantly and the engine runs well—just needs a slight tune-up to be perfect. The brakes work fine but could benefit from a minor adjustment. The gearbox and overdrive operate smoothly. As with most fully renovated cars, a few small adjustments may be needed after a complete rebuild.

It sits on a set of superb wheels with excellent tires. The only minor note is that the spare wheel is missing from the boot.

  • Zustand Interieur:

The interior is like new—if not better. The only notable flaw is some fraying on the original driver’s seatbelt. All gauges and instruments are functioning, except for the clock and rev counter, which need attention. The rev counter currently gives inaccurate readings and will require a review.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

The bodywork is completely undamaged and still looks just as it did when the renovation was completed. This condition is matched by the clean, solid underbody. A nice detail is that the owner chose to retain the original chrome around the windows, door handles, and bumpers—preserving the classic feel. While these original pieces still shine, some light oxidation is present. All other chrome trim has been replaced with new.

The paintwork is clean, bright, and damage-free, with the only flaw being micro-blistering on the left side of the roof—hardly noticeable (see pictures). The only other remark is that the front left section of the bumper could use minor realignment.

  • Zustand gesamt:

As you’ve read, these cars are expensive to renovate—and even more costly to purchase as a restoration project. With this example, you're getting a lot of value for money. It only needs a few minor tweaks to be nearly perfect.

Fakten zum Modell

When Volvo assessed the quality and partnership with Jensen Motors (who built the first series of the car) in 1961, a task group was assembled in the fall of that year due to well-founded concerns that warranted bringing production in-house. After a few turbulent years, that decision was realized, and from 1963 onward, production was moved to Sweden. At that point, the model designation changed from having a "P" prefix to an "S" suffix—thus becoming the 1800S instead of the P1800. However, in everyday language, the car is still often referred to as the P1800, even though only the Jensen-built cars are officially named that.
