A few years later, the owner and his wife did not hesitate to take the Excalibur on a road trip to the French Riviera and Monaco. They avoided the motorways and brought the fabric soft top with them, although much of the journey was still enjoyed with the roof down – even in light rain. At speed, the windscreen does a surprisingly effective job of keeping much of the rain away.
The odometer now reads 15,330 km, which is the distance the car has covered since the restoration in 1992. Before the restoration, the mileage shown corresponded to approximately 21,000 km, giving the car a total distance travelled today of just over 36,000 km.
The latest, and under current regulations final, approved inspection was carried out on 7 September 2022.

The engine was also rebuilt in 1992. Since then, the camshafts have been replaced once. According to the workshop, the car had simply been driven at too low engine speeds for the cams to receive proper lubrication.
The engine pulls strongly and the automatic transmission feels normal in operation. The steering is slightly over-sensitive on initial turn-in, which the owner believes is a matter of adjustment.
The car has recently been fitted with new brakes, which work well and provide good stopping power.
The windscreen wipers are missing their wiper motor, which should be a Jaguar unit. The rest of the wiper linkage is, however, complete and intact. -
Zustand Interieur
A very pleasant and fresh leather interior, with the material sourced from Elmo Leather in Svenljunga. The carpets are equally well presented, while the metric instruments sit neatly in an attractive wood-trimmed dashboard together with the controls and switches. A completely new electrical system was also installed during the restoration.

Presentable, well preserved and attractively finished, the paintwork shows only normal wear and patina consistent with the car’s age. The removable luggage box carries a small period-style painted motif.
The traditional Volkswagen Type 1 rear lights originally used on this model were replaced during the repaint with much more stylistically appropriate units from an Austin-Healey Sprite Mk1.
The tyres are relatively recent and have good tread, although they are slightly larger than the original specification. The spare wheel tyres are older originals and still fit correctly in the spare wheel wells, so they have been retained.
The soft top is clean and intact, as are the side sections and the hardtop. The hardtop is fitted first, with the soft top then installed over it. -
Zustand gesamt
For anyone looking for a fine Excalibur Phaeton in Sweden, this is an especially appealing example with many strong qualities. It runs very well, benefits from an older and proven restoration, and has been carefully looked after by the same owner for many years.

Fakten zum Modell
The company had made its name building modern luxury cars with styling heavily inspired by the legendary Mercedes-Benz SSK of the 1930s, and by the early 1970s the cars had evolved into larger, more comfortable machines than their predecessors.
The 1973 model belonged to the Series II generation, introduced in 1970 and produced until 1975. It was offered primarily as the four-seat Phaeton, as well as a two-seat Roadster. Unlike the earliest Excaliburs, which were based on modified Studebaker chassis, the 1973 model used a substantial purpose-built chassis with a heavy-duty frame designed to cope with the car’s considerable size and weight.
Under the long bonnet was classic American big-block power in the form of a 454 cu in Chevrolet V8, paired with a three-speed TH automatic transmission. This gave the large luxury car impressive acceleration together with a smooth, effortless driving character that appealed strongly to the wealthy and famous buyers of the period.
Visually, the 1973 Excalibur was defined by its large freestanding headlamps, distinctive chrome exhaust pipes emerging from the sides of the engine bay, classic centre-lock wire wheels and twin spare wheels mounted either alongside the body or at the rear.
The interior was lavish by the standards of the time, with extensive use of leather and genuine wood trim, combined with contemporary conveniences such as power steering, air conditioning and a stereo system. The result was a striking contrast between the nostalgic exterior design and the modern comfort within.
As each car was hand-built in very limited numbers – with total Excalibur production for 1973 amounting to only just over one hundred cars – the model quickly became an exclusive status symbol in Hollywood and among the international jet set.
Today, the 1973 Excalibur is regarded as a collectible classic and a symbol of the extravagance of 1970s motoring culture, where modern mechanical reliability was combined with an uncompromising interpretation of the styling ideals of an earlier era.
