Beschreibung

The first owner was Sir Gordon Richards, perhaps the most renowned jockey in England and possibly the world. He later became a manager with his own stable and holds the distinction of being the only jockey in history to be knighted. On February 28, 1934, he ordered this car from H.R Owen - the legendary Rolls-Royce dealer in London. Chassis 135RY was fitted with a body from Gurney Nutting. This was the only body of its kind ever produced, and the design was by A.F McNeil. The car was delivered on June 23 and was initially painted in solid black.

There is a gap in the known history, but by the late 1960s, the car was part of the James Hall Collection, a private collection in Johannesburg, South Africa. At that time, the car had come from Egypt. An unconfirmed rumor suggests it might have belonged to King Farouk's car collection. In the early 1970s, while in James Hall's possession, the car underwent a restoration, acquiring a black/red color scheme and reupholstered seats. During this period, the car appeared in a few film shoots, including "I'm for the Hippopotamus" starring Terrence Hill and Bud Spencer in 1979. The Hall family retained the car until 1997. It was then sold to David Cohen, who brought it back to England. Sotheby's auctioned the car, which by then had been repainted in shades of gray with red lines.

The car's next owner was Gregor Fisken, a racing driver and dealer of luxury cars in London. Subsequently, the car went to Austria and into the collection of Rudolf Dvorak in Strasshof. Before exporting, the car was repainted in its current silver/black scheme in England. Upon Dvorak's passing in 2014, the car was sold to Richard Biddulph of Vintage & Prestige Classic Cars in England, who had the engine fully restored. From there, it was sold to its current owner in Sweden in 2016.

Since the engine restoration, the car has only been driven around 5,000 kilometers. During its time in Sweden, it has won numerous awards and has been featured in several reports and articles.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

    Engine: A straight-six with a 7.7-liter capacity and a four-speed gearbox with synchronization on third and fourth gears. It has dual spark plugs that operate on both magneto and battery ignition. The engine underwent a complete overhaul in 2015. It's the original engine #QW45 that's in the car. To demonstrate how silent and vibration-free their engines were, Rolls-Royce chose to mount it rigidly to the frame. Indeed, no vibrations are felt. It starts easily; the engine and drivetrain operate as quietly and smoothly as one would expect from a vehicle of this class. The car has been equipped with new tires of the correct type, received a new radiator, a new exhaust system, and recently underwent service. In short - it's in peak technical condition, from its machinery to its electrical systems.

  • Zustand Interieur:

    The interior features a foldable division between the driver's and passenger's space. The front bench has been reupholstered and covered with high-quality grey leather. A scuff mark is visible on the driver's side door. Other than that, it's nearly flawless. Originally, the seat was in black leather. The carpets have been replaced and are of exceptional quality and fit. Woodwork, controls, and instruments are in very good condition. The front and rear sections are divided by a height-adjustable window. During the renovation in South Africa, the rear seat was reupholstered in a beautifully patterned velour that's period-correct. Apart from a few spots on the armrest, it has held up excellently over the years. The woodwork in the rear is in exquisite condition, as are the bakelite ashtrays. Two hidden ashtrays are also incorporated into the seat armrests.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

    Near top condition. The body is made of aluminum. The paint is very fine and glossy. It was painted in this scheme about 20 years ago and has maintained well since then. Some imperfections can be seen on the upper part of the dashboard, and a few bubbles are noticeable on the rear part. Chrome parts, lights, and wheels are in the best condition. Spoked wheels with matching hubcaps. Black wheel discs, damage-free with a high finish. Included are also an additional set in polished aluminum that is more in a used condition.

  • Zustand gesamt:

    A magnificent car in exquisite condition. High-quality finish and solid craftsmanship throughout – from the paint, body to the interior. It has been housed by enthusiasts and collectors who have cared for the car with the utmost care. Based on its condition and history, there's reason to believe that the car's total mileage hasn't been very high over the years.

Fakten zum Modell

The Rolls-Royce Phantom II 40/50 hp was produced between the years 1929-1935, with 1681 units made. The vehicles were sold as chassis only, with external coachbuilders responsible for the bodywork. The engine is a straight-six, 7.7-liter unit. The wheelbase measures 381 centimeters, making it the largest chassis Rolls-Royce had produced up to that point. Out of the 1681 vehicles, 279 were of the Continental variant.

Chassis #135RY is not a Continental, but it was equipped with several Continental parts, such as a type F steering column with a lower angle and a different steering ratio, and a spare wheel mounted on the trunk. Gurney Nutting provided 53 Phantom II cars with bodywork, of which this sports saloon is a unique 'one-off' design.
