Volkswagen Golf GLi Cabriolet — 1983

A GLI Cab in fine condition despite a relatively long mileage. A nostalgic cab with a pleasant aura from the happy 1980s when shoulder pads were gigantic.

"The car feels very nice to drive. Quick and lively in its temperament and beautiful to behold. Only minor cosmetic imperfections can be discerned."

Beschreibung

A car sold new in the spring of 1983. Multiple owners have used the car but surely there are several car dealers among its users. The current owner purchased the car in early summer this year and has since addressed minor things on the car. The body is in good working condition and the cab is tight and fine. Most likely it has been replaced at some point during the car's lifetime. Inspected in 2025 and is completely ready for the road.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch

Feels fine in the engine and pulls nicely through the gears. The gearbox is a little soft but the gears engage very easily. This is not entirely uncommon on these 1980s Golfs. All functions are in order except for the fan which does not work.

  • Zustand Interieur

Interior in fine condition, however with a few exceptions. The upper part of the door panels has some cracks which are clearly visible in the pictures. The driver's seat backrest at the entry point has been repaired. A wear mark that is very common on these curved backrests.

  • Zustand Exterieur

Externally fine, though the overall impression could certainly be enhanced a step further with a proper polish. There is some beginning surface rust damage at one of the rear wheel arches. Visible in the wheel image. Fine and presumably replaced cab. Tyres from 2014 but with very good tread.

  • Zustand gesamt

The car makes a good impression and I consider it to be a vehicle that offers excellent value for money.

Fakten zum Modell

Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet was launched in 1979 and has since evolved through several generations to become one of the world's most popular open-air cars.

Golf I Cabriolet (1979–1993): Built by coachbuilder Karmann and characterized by its fixed roll bar (called the "Glassroof") above the B-pillar. It became an enormous success with nearly 390,000 units produced, and remained in production long after the standard Golf I had been replaced by the Golf II.

Since its launch, the model has become one of the world's most produced cars and therefore the size segment to which the model belongs has in some countries been called the Golf class. In the USA, the Golf (called VW Rabbit) is typically classified in the so-called compact class.

Volkswagen had long relied on the "Beetle" (Volkswagen Type 1) but in the early 1970s it was outdated and needed to be replaced by a new sales success. Earlier attempts at a successor had been rather unsuccessful. Volkswagen Golf, however, became a long-awaited success and today is in its 8th generation. The first generation ceased production in Europe in 1984, but in South Africa production of the Golf Type 1 continued until 2009 under the name Volkswagen Citi Golf. The name Golf comes from the Gulf Stream, with other VW model names taken from winds (for example Passat and Scirocco).

In the USA and Canada the car was called Volkswagen Rabbit from 1974–1984. The model was technically identical to the European Golfs, but featured more comprehensive standard equipment as well as headlights and bumpers that met American safety requirements. In the USA and Canada, Golf is again called Rabbit since the model's relaunch in 2006.
