Beschreibung

It was delivered new in Sweden in July 1966. Eighteen years later, in 1984, the car was taken off the road and became a restoration project. It still is, and to get this car back in shape it will require a complete disassembly, correcting welds that don’t meet the standard, and then a full restoration with everything that entails in terms of time and cost. For a skilled mechanic with both bodywork and painting knowledge, it is a reasonable project. Most parts are included; what is missing are the side windows and probably a few other items, but we have had two knowledgeable MG enthusiasts go through all the parts and try to identify them.

Fakten zum Modell

At the end of the 1950s, the project was launched to develop the MGB as the successor to the MGA. In September 1962, the new roadster was unveiled and received positive reviews from both the motoring press and buyers. The 1798 cc engine with twin SU carburetors provided excellent performance for the time. The gearbox was a four-speed, and for a modest extra cost, buyers could opt for an electric overdrive.

From 1965, the technology was improved with a five-bearing crankshaft, an oil cooler as standard, and an electric tachometer. That same year, a stylish and practical three-door 2+2 coupé version was introduced, called the GT, in a then-fashionable fastback design by Pininfarina. It was designed so that hunting, golf, and other sports and leisure equipment could fit into a sports car.

Even though another British classic carries the nickname “the Mini,” this car could just as well be called the perfect vehicle for a couple of Westies in the back. The small rear seat had a folding backrest. Two years later, a six-cylinder engine was fitted, available both in open and closed versions, called the MGC. And a little later, it also came with Rover’s aluminum V8, significantly lighter than the cast-iron six, which had originally been a truck engine.
