Beschreibung

This is a stalled project that has been garage-stored for 10 years. The vehicle served as a company car for Domänverket in Lycksele from 1976 until 1999 and was used by forestry inspectors in the inland of northern Sweden. After that, the bus was converted into a camper in Dalarna and later stored in Gothenburg, where it has been kept for the past six years following repainting.

The vehicle was purchased ten years ago in Borlänge by a VW enthusiast who needed the engine for another bus. The original plan was to borrow the engine over the summer and then source another one. Later, the idea of converting it to electric drive emerged, and the owner decided to first make the bodywork really nice.

The bus was well suited for this project as it has a sought-after color and was exceptionally well preserved. There were no visible damages or rust issues, only oxidized paint. The vehicle was disassembled by a workshop and professionally fully repainted, both exterior and interior, including door jambs, engine bay, etc. At the same time, all rubber seals around windows and doors were replaced, a new windshield was installed, and new wheels were fitted.

After that, the project came to a halt, and now someone else gets the opportunity to complete the technical work and get the vehicle back on the road.

A suitable VW bus engine is available for purchase in Gothenburg for SEK 16,000 if desired. It is currently installed in a healthy VW 1303, which is included in the deal. Another option is to purchase and have a rebuilt engine installed through, for example, Fahlkes VW workshop in Åmål. For those interested in electric motor and battery conversion, complete kits for VW buses are recommended, where the electric motor mounts to the original gearbox. See, for example, www.evwest.com
and www.legacyev.com
, both of which offer ready-made kits for this purpose.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

The vehicle rolls and brakes, but the engine and fuel tank are missing. The gearbox is installed. Sold as a project vehicle.

  • Zustand Interieur:

The entire interior has been painted. Nice dashboard and steering wheel – the driver’s area in general is in good, well-preserved condition. The seats have been temporarily replaced with Volvo seats, but newly upholstered seats in original specification are included.

The vehicle previously had a homemade camper interior, which has been discarded, and the space is now completely empty of interior fittings.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

A northern Sweden–used vehicle that has been driven on salt-free roads and stored indoors when not in use, which explains its excellent preservation. It features an expensive, high-quality repaint in the original color Taiga Green – paint code VW L63H – which was only available during the last two years of this model. The color was produced for just over two years, from 1975 to 1977. The paintwork is in top condition.

The wheels are in equally fine condition with new tires fitted. All exterior rubber seals are new.

Floors, doors, and panels are free from rust and damage. There are a few isolated areas where the step sections had some surface rust, which was addressed during repainting. Older repairs and a small hole can be seen in the wheel arches; apart from that, no body panels have been replaced on the vehicle. There is minor damage to one front headlight reflector, and the windshield wipers are missing.

  • Zustand gesamt:

Nice, undamaged body with perfect paintwork and very good panel fit. Suitable for someone who wants a really fine bus as a starting point to build and finish according to their own ideas regarding engine options, interior, etc.

The vehicle is registered as a light truck since it was converted into a camper.

Fakten zum Modell

The VW Type 2 (the bus), second generation T2 model, was manufactured between 1968 and 1981. The T2 is a further development of the classic T1 bus, featuring a rear-mounted engine and the iconic split windshield. The model is also known as the VW Bay or Bay Window.

With the T2, the driver’s area became larger, as did the windows all around. It was also equipped with a sliding side door, as well as improved chassis, brakes, gearbox, and completely new engines. From 1970 onwards, crash safety was significantly improved with the addition of a substantial reinforcement beam behind the front bumper, among other upgrades.

Today, T1 and T2 buses are cult classics worldwide and highly sought-after as hobby vehicles. They became especially popular in the United States as camper vans, since the interior could easily be converted into a sleeping area using various accessories. The most popular camper interior is known as Westfalia and was available either as a kit or factory-installed in new buses. Today, ready-to-install versions of these interiors can be ordered as newly manufactured modules from several British, German, Belgian, and Dutch companies.
