"An opportunity for a Volvo collector to acquire one of Volvo’s most successful ambulance models. This example remains in genuine, original condition."

Beschreibung

Ambulances are typically the kind of utility vehicles that see heavy use and high mileage, but this one is something of an exception, showing just 170,620 kilometers on the odometer. One reason for the relatively low mileage is that it served as an ambulance on the island of Ven, where it carried the call sign SDM 949. Later, it was based in Landskrona, where it was known as SDM 943.

The body shows some patina in the form of a few scratches and minor rust spots, but this is balanced by its honest, original condition. A previous owner restored the vehicle to display its original call sign and also had new, correctly white AMBULANS decals made.

A set of keys is included. There is no service book. The vehicle passed inspection without remarks last year and is not due for its next inspection until May 31, 2026.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

Starts and runs well — the strong B28E engine produces its characteristic ticking sound for this engine type and responds nicely to throttle input. The automatic transmission shifted smoothly during the test. The fog lights did not appear to be working, and the radio antenna is broken. Common electrical functions such as the cabin fan, windshield wipers, and horn were tested and found to be in proper working order.

  • Zustand Interieur:

There are a few small screw holes on the dashboard, and the driver’s seat has a minor tear in a less visible spot – see photos. In the rear patient compartment, one of the seats shows some damage, but the overall impression is still of a very well-preserved, though clearly used, interior. There is also a considerable amount of equipment and medical supplies stored in the various compartments and shelves. The stretcher’s lift and lowering functions, as well as the communication equipment, have not been tested.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

Gives a tidy overall impression, though there are scratches, dents, and areas of rust. The rust damage is mainly found in the rear wheel arches and along the lower edges of two of the patient compartment windows on the right-hand side. The underbody appears to be well protected against corrosion. The tailgate requires new gas struts, as it no longer stays open on its own. An upper trim piece is missing from the rear bumper, and two of the wheel covers are missing.

  • Zustand gesamt:

An ambulance that is, overall, in good original condition, even though the body shows its share of wear and tear. With medical equipment still tucked away in various compartments, it offers an authentic glimpse of what an ambulance looked like in the 1980s — and as a vehicle, it runs and functions well.

Fakten zum Modell

The first ambulances based on Volvo models appeared as early as the 1930s. One of the leading manufacturers of Volvo special vehicles was founded in 1945 — Yngve Nilsson’s Karosserifabrik in Laholm, Sweden. The company produced limousines, hearses, and, not least, ambulances based on Volvo cars.

From the very first model year of the Volvo 200 series, several ambulance versions were available. There was a simpler patient transport vehicle with only a raised roof, and a full-size ambulance that was both significantly raised and extended, allowing medical care to be provided during transport. The ambulances were delivered as bare shells to Yngve Nilsson’s Karosserifabrik, where they were fitted with interiors, exterior decoration, and specialized equipment. Each ambulance took around four days to complete.

In the rear compartment, there was space for a stretcher sled and a foldable attendant’s seat. The side door was large enough to serve as an emergency exit for the stretcher as well. The windows in the treatment area were small to ensure privacy. Spacious compartments provided storage for medical equipment and supplies.

The model was simply called “Volvo Ambulance”, and outwardly it resembled the Volvo 240. However, it was powered by the French-built V6 engine that had first appeared in the 260 series and later in the 760. An interesting detail is that when the regular station wagon models — starting with the 1981 model year — received new, rounder tail lights that wrapped around the corners, the ambulance version continued to use the older tail lights that had remained virtually unchanged since the Volvo 145 was introduced in 1968.

In 1981, the new B28E engine was also introduced, producing 155 horsepower — 14 more than the previous B27E engine.

According to Volvo’s production statistics, around 900 ambulances were built on the 200-series platform. They were not only used in Sweden and the other Nordic countries but were also exported to countries including Libya, Nigeria, Jamaica, and Thailand.
