"Yes, here we go again. One of those somewhat unique Volvo cars with few owners and low mileage. Both parents and their son have owned and sparingly driven this wagon through the years since it was first used in 1964. Its condition is neither showroom nor restored. Here we have a wagon in a relatively unique used and almost untouched condition with both signs of wear and maintenance traces, but what a time capsule. There are details that could be fixed, or one could preserve it as it is - a glimpse into the era of the Swedish welfare state. A gentle reconditioning would do this wagon even more justice."

Beschreibung

This car was registered for traffic in Sweden on April 20, 1964. The first owner was the father of the current owner, and the son took over ownership in April 1987. When the car was new, the family took a trip to the south of France, and a photo from that journey can be found at the end of the image sequence. Over the years, with the mother and father behind the wheel, the car was used as a regular family vehicle, always receiving the necessary service. It was treated with rust protection, and at some point—likely in the 1970s—it received new front fenders.

Since the son took over, the car has been driven sparingly, and the odometer now reads 71,550 km. According to records and the service book, the odometer has rolled over once, meaning the car has covered just over 170,000 km in 60 years, with the majority of the mileage accumulated in the 1960s and 70s. The son, who is the current owner and a dedicated automotive historian and enthusiast, has owned about 20 cars in his collection, meaning the Amazon has had to share the spotlight.

Today, the car remains in original condition, with most parts being authentic. Included with the car is a period-correct Blaupunkt Derby transistor radio, which sits in a "cassette" when used in the car. Also included are the original registration certificate, owner’s manual, service booklet, and the service plate from that era.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

Starts easily and runs smoothly and nicely in engine and drivetrain. During test drives in urban areas and on highways, the drive was as it should be in a 60s Amazon. Robust and comfortable. Steering, handling, clutch, gearbox, overdrive, and brakes all worked excellently. Newer exhaust system. The brake servo was fixed a few years ago. Since the car has mostly been stationary for many years, and it has been a while since its last service and oil change, a review and service measures are recommended. Not checked on a lift, but what could be seen looked good regarding the vital parts underneath.

  • Zustand Interieur:

Pleasant interior in textile and galon in red (414-247) which appears to be in original condition. Has had covers for many years. Carefully loosened the cushions on the front seats and backrest to inspect the original upholstery, found some usage patina and minor damage but overall in good condition. The backrest on the driver's seat is slightly skewed. Door panels and panels in good condition. Door seals are patinated. Steering wheel, instruments, and controls in good condition. Crack in steering wheel but the upper part of the dashboard is intact. All functions appear to work well. Radio not tested. Nice headliner with a small damage above the rear window and fine original rubber mats.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

During the inspection, the car was a bit dusty but the graphite gray (80) paint is overall in good condition for its age and mileage. There are stone chips, small scratches, and dents, as well as a flake of paint that has come off on the passenger door. The front fenders have been replaced and painted, probably in the 70s. There are also some minor touch-ups in the paint. It is uncertain whether the rest of the car is entirely or partially original. The current owner does not remember any repaintings, and it looks very original, but no guarantees can be made that this is the case. The glass, gloss, emblems, and lighting details are likewise in good condition but with signs of wear on the trims and the hatchback handle. The front bumper is slightly bent at the front edge. The rims, original hubcaps, and beauty rings are in good condition with some patina. The tires are aged. The engine and boot compartments are in good condition.

  • Zustand gesamt:

Let's summarize: The Volvo Amazon Sport, with its SU carburetors, 90 hp, Overdrive, two-door graphite grey with red textile/galon interior, fine grey rubber mats, classic grille, the older hubcaps with beauty rings, Blaupunkt Derby, and the tools in the trunk - nothing replaced or added from Comfort Racing or similar. We're talking original condition from 1964, in a state that Knut Knutsson from Antikrundan would have appreciated. A motor-historical time capsule, a classic and enthusiast car that touches and evokes emotions. Cool!

Fakten zum Modell

There has certainly been volumes written about the Amazon, one of our most beloved classic cars. Designed by Jan Wilsgaard with a touch of Italian influence, it was Volvo’s answer to the so-called pontoon body, which became a hallmark of the 1950s. Manufactured as model years 1957-1970, it became the world’s first mass-produced car with a standard three-point seatbelt in the front seats in 1959.

The bulletproof B18 engine, delivering 75 hp, was introduced for the 1962 model year, along with the two-door model and the estate version. For the sportier drivers, the Sport versions now offered 90 hp.

The 1964 model year marked the last with the grille, wheels, hubcaps, and interior featuring the 1950s look, with only minor changes being made. For instance, the trunk handle and emblem were redesigned, setting the tone for the 1965 models, which saw numerous modernizations and updates.

When the 1970s arrived, the Amazon was retired after 14 model years and 667,332 units produced. Available as a two-, four-, or five-door model, in standard versions as well as Sport and GT variants, it remains a Swedish icon and a significant part of automotive history.
