"A red PV Sport is on many car enthusiasts’ wish lists. Here is a genuine Sport with full documentation, owned only by father and son since new. Last inspected at the vehicle testing authority in 2018, and under current regulations it is approved for road use indefinitely. We are not aware of anything requiring immediate attention. Regular check-up and service are recommended. Otherwise, the car is ready to drive."

Beschreibung

The late Reinhold Lindbäck worked as a truck mechanic at Volvo in Kalix. A recognized expert, he later advanced to foreman at the same company. In the spring of 1963, Reinhold bought a new Volvo PV Sport from Auto-Steinwall AB in Kalix. Upon registration, it was given the number BD 59726. According to the preserved purchase contract, the car cost 14,098 SEK. The deal included the following extras: replacement of the standard diagonal tires with Michelin X, and overriders on both the front and rear bumpers. In trade, Reinhold left a 1956 Volvo PV 444, valued at 3,328 SEK. He paid 6,000 SEK in cash, and the remaining 4,770 SEK was financed over 15 months.

It turned out Reinhold was so pleased with his PV Sport that he kept it for the rest of his life—a true case of customer satisfaction. His son recalls family vacations in the PV in the early 1970s. By the late 1970s, a new Volvo 244 had been purchased, and the PV mostly rested in the garage.

In 1987, Reinhold decided to restore his PV Sport. He went about it thoroughly: repairing the body, replacing all four fenders with brand-new ones, and having the car repainted in its original Cherry Red (code 46). The engine was also removed and rebuilt. All receipts for the new parts purchased during the 1987–1988 restoration are included. After the restoration, the son—who is now selling the car—estimates it has only been driven about 200 km. The family used it for various summer car meets, including in Haparanda and Luleå. The current odometer reading is just under 80,000 km, but it is believed to have rolled over once, meaning the true mileage is likely around 180,000 km.

Included with the car are the jack, spare wheel, and a set of studded winter tires from the 1970s. The winter tires are outdated and should be considered curiosities only. A wealth of documentation also comes with the car, including the service book, owner’s manual, and the original purchase receipt from 1963, as well as a few photos from the 1988 restoration.

This is a distance auction. The images and information about the car and its technical condition have been provided by the owner. BWA has not inspected the car on site.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

Volvo B18D sport engine (1.8 liters) with twin SU carburetors. The Sport model’s engine was rated at 90 hp—15 more horsepower than the standard engine’s 75 hp. Equipped with a fully synchronized 4-speed gearbox. Starts easily and runs well. Taken out of the garage twice a year, warmed up, and driven a short distance each time to keep the car exercised.

  • Zustand Interieur:

Original interior. Nice headliner. The rear seat backrest upholstery was replaced in 1988; the rest of the seat upholstery is original, with some wear and sun fading—see pictures. Original rubber mat in somewhat poorer condition, beginning to deteriorate. Instrument padding and steering wheel in good condition. Equipped with an aftermarket tachometer mounted at the left A-pillar (function uncertain). Retrofitted seatbelts for improved safety. In 1988, a seatbelt warning system from a newer Volvo was also installed. Period-correct working car radio.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

Completely repainted in its original color in 1988. At the same time, all fenders were replaced with new ones, and the front bumper was also replaced with a new unit. The work appears to have been well done. Still, it’s been 37 years since, so some wear has appeared—such as rust on the rear bumper, some scratches, stone chips, etc. Study the pictures carefully to examine the body more closely. Overall, the car appears to be in well-preserved condition. The tires are starting to age, as they were mounted new in 1988. Equipped with auxiliary lights of the Bosch Knick 150 model from the latter half of the 1960s.

  • Zustand gesamt:

In the same family since new. Father and son have been the only owners and users of the car. Driven very sparingly since the 1988 restoration. Feels very genuine and comes with unusually good documentation. Check the pictures for a better impression of its condition.

Fakten zum Modell

The PV 444 and 544 are without doubt the models that have meant the most for Volvo’s passenger car production. The Volvo PV 444 entered production in 1947, and the last PV 544 rolled off the line in 1965 after a total of 440,000 units.

The first Sport appeared in 1958, shortly after the introduction of the PV 544. The more powerful engine, featuring twin carburetors, was initially intended only for the U.S. market, but by late 1958 it became clear that it could also be sold on the home market without raising import duties in the U.S.

The earliest versions were fitted with the B16B engine producing 85 hp, but in August 1961 it was replaced by the new five-bearing B18 engine. The PV 544 Sport was then given the B18D engine with 90 hp. In August 1965, the Sport’s output was increased to 95 hp, but just a month later Volvo announced that production of the model would end in late October 1965.

The very last PV built was a black 544 Sport.
