"After the launch of the 1969 model year, numerous improvements were quickly made over the following years, and the ’76 was in many ways a significant upgrade from the original version. This car, with its discreet yet tasteful 1970s color scheme and the comfortable GL trim level, stands as a fine representative of Swedish design and engineering from 50 years ago. It is in nice and relatively unspoiled condition, ready to offer many more miles of driving pleasure to its next owner. There are, of course, a few details that could use some attention—but then again, what 50-year-old doesn’t have those?"

Beschreibung

This car was first registered for road use on April 27, 1976. For many years it was driven in the Östersund area and later in northern Småland. It is now with its seventh owner, who acquired the car on July 3 this year. Included with the car is a binder that has followed the various owners. It contains numerous documents, including inspection reports that confirm the low mileage of 68,170 km. There are also papers from previous owners detailing mileage, maintenance, and more.

The car comes with a new headliner and a complete installation kit with adhesive, all unopened. Original wheels with hubcaps and older tires are included, as well as some small spare parts and a removed radio. Two antennas are provided—one short, currently mounted on the car, and one long original antenna. Two sets of keys are included.

The car passed inspection on October 3, 2024, with no remarks, for the final time under the current regulations. It is ready to drive.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

Starts easily, and the engine and drivetrain run smoothly. During a short and gentle test drive around the neighborhood, everything—steering, clutch, gear shifting, and brakes—felt in good working order. The car has not been inspected on a lift, but the visible vital components appeared to be in decent condition. No remarks were noted during the vehicle inspection. However, there are some areas showing early signs of rust, such as under the doors, along the sills, and on the body edges—common for this model.

  • Zustand Interieur:

Interior in original condition, offering good comfort in both the front and rear seats. Upholstery in textile and vinyl—seats, door panels, trim, and carpets—are all in nice condition. A seam has come loose on the driver’s seat backrest. Saab rubber floor mats are included, with the driver’s side showing wear. The headliner has come loose but remains in place; a new headliner is included. Steering wheel, controls, dashboard, and gauges are all in very good condition. All electrical functions appear to be working properly.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

Orchide White W 02 H paint in good condition, showing normal wear consistent with age and mileage. It appears to retain some of its original paint, though the front fenders and hood have been resprayed in a slightly lighter shade. At least one of the doors has likely been repainted as well. Glass, rubber/plastic trim, moldings, emblems, and lighting components are all in good condition. The Ronal wheels are well cared for and fitted with nice Dunlop tires. The engine bay and luggage compartment are in the same good condition as the rest of the car.

  • Zustand gesamt:

The model has its roots in the 1960s, and this car has now spent nearly 50 years on our roads. The model marked a major image boost for Saab and represents a historically significant milestone in automotive history. Combined with its genuine condition, few owners, and low mileage, this 99 stands out as a fine classic and enthusiast’s car.

Fakten zum Modell

The “broad-shouldered Swede,” the SAAB 99, was first produced as the 1969 model year. It was a two-door, front-wheel-drive car powered by an 80 hp engine. The following year, a four-door version was introduced, featuring a fuel-injected engine producing 87 hp. Quite soon after its debut, a number of improvements and upgrades were made — not only to the engines and body design but also to various safety features that received praise and positive attention. More powerful versions were introduced as well, such as the EMS, LE, and GLE, with the EMS in particular marketed as a sporty family car with a range of performance accessories.
For the 1976 model year, the 99 was offered in L, GL, EMS, and GLE versions. The base engine was a 2.0-liter unit producing 100 hp. Versions with the E engines, featuring fuel injection, delivered 118 hp. New features for the year included an improved clutch, wider wheels, upgraded instruments, an electrically heated rear window (finally also on sedan models), new trunk lining, and better low-beam headlights. During the year, the GLE model was introduced as a four-door sedan, along with a new five-door version featuring extra windows in the C-pillars. As usual, minor updates were also made to paint colors and upholstery options.
Production took place in Sweden and Finland, with assembly in Belgium. And in 1976 came the big news: Saab announced plans for a turbocharged engine. Those were the days...
