Beschreibung

The previous owner bought the car as early as 1992, but it wasn’t until 2012 that it was re-registered and inspected again after a long period of inactivity. When the car was purchased, it was in good, unrestored condition but in need of work— a long-term project that took some time to complete.

When work on the car began, the original engine had run its last round – the engine block was cracked and unusable. The decision was made to replace it with a Volvo B4B engine. A good engine was sourced, disassembled, and cleaned. The crankshaft was ground, the cylinder head refurbished, the cylinders honed, and new piston rings installed. The original engine is gone, but the result is an engine that runs really well.

The gearbox also received attention. It was dismantled, thoroughly cleaned, and certain parts were replaced. The rear axle was cleaned but otherwise left untouched – it ran quietly and smoothly as it was. The brakes were completely refurbished and now work perfectly.

Virtually every part of the car has undergone restoration. Nothing was left to chance. Originally, the car had a fabric interior, but it has now been upgraded with new leather upholstery. The chrome details are spotless and shiny, and the paintwork looks good without being overly “thick” or glossy.

Since completion, the Hanomag has seen only sparing use. Some documentation comes with the car—see the photos.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

Runs very well in terms of engine and drivetrain. However, the choke needs to be looked over as it doesn’t seem to function as it should, and the cooling system has a slight leak at the water pump and/or the thermostat housing.

Most parts of the car have been inspected and/or refurbished, and all auxiliary equipment appears to function as intended, except for the fuel gauge, which constantly shows full. An electric fan is mounted on the radiator, and the control unit can be seen on the car’s right-hand side of the dashboard.

  • Zustand Interieur:

The interior as a whole is in very good, well-restored, and well-maintained condition.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

The car’s paintwork is in good condition—neither overly glossy nor lacking in character. The chrome is also in very good condition. The underside of the car likewise appears to be clean and in good shape.

  • Zustand gesamt:

A pre-war Hanomag Rekord in tasteful and well-restored condition. Inspected and approved by the vehicle inspection authority, and therefore ready to drive.

Fakten zum Modell

The model "Rekord" was a mid-class car produced by the German company Hanomag between 1933 and 1940. The 1936 model year belongs to the later part of the production run and represents some of the more improved versions of the model.

Brief history:
Hanomag, which originally manufactured agricultural machinery and trains, entered the passenger car segment in the 1920s. The Rekord was launched in 1933 as a further development of Hanomag’s 1.3-liter model and was a modern car for its time. It featured a unibody construction, which was unusual in the 1930s, and it was sold both as a sedan and a cabriolet.

Technology and specifications for the 1936 model:
Engine: 1.5-liter four-cylinder side-valve engine, producing approximately 32–35 hp.
Top speed: Around 100 km/h.
Drivetrain: Rear-wheel drive.
Gearbox: Four-speed manual.
Other: The Hanomag Rekord was well-built and relatively fuel-efficient for its time. It was particularly popular among middle-class families and taxi operators.

Design and status:
The body featured typical 1930s styling with rounded shapes and a simple yet elegant design. The Rekord was one of Hanomag’s most successful passenger cars and was often compared with Opel and Ford models in the same class. It was known for its robustness and ease of maintenance, which contributed to several examples surviving to this day, even though it is now a rare sight.

After the Second World War, Hanomag ceased producing passenger cars and instead focused on trucks and tractors, before the company was eventually absorbed by other industrial actors.
