BMC Austin 850 848cc — 1965

Out of traffic from 1983 to 2018 and subsequently finely renovated from the ground up by a Mini-man well-known and recognized within enthusiast circles, with nearly sixty years of experience with BMC cars, he began tinkering with his father's car as an enthusiastic 14-year-old. The car also has a fine and curiously interesting documentation, including an old stamped service book and all inspection protocols.

Beschreibung

It was delivered new by Julius Olsson’s Garage in Falkenberg on – according to the preserved warranty deed – New Year's Eve 1964 to a Jan-Erik Svensson. Jan-Erik regularly serviced the car at Julius's until 1973 and just over 9,800 kilometers. It was then sold in 1974 to the BMC-profile Gösta Pettersson in Markaryd. The car rolled just under 1,900 more kilometers with one of Pettersson's mechanics, Harald, and was inspected for the last time in 1979 before it was put away in 1983 with just over 11,700 kilometers driven. By then, a pipe to the Hydrovac suspension had rusted off and the car was rolled into the back of a heated garage. The current owner told Harald early on, who had actually also been his mentor in the mechanical BMC world, to buy the red stationary hut. Harald declined for several years - they lived and still live in the same town - but eventually, the current owner got to buy the BMC in 2018 and began a thorough, fine restoration from a blasted body. All service occasions from 1965 to 1973 are documented in the preserved service book, as well as the original warranty deed and all inspection protocols from the first on March 27, 1968, to the latest and thus last inspection on April 26, 2018, at 11,730 kilometers. Today, the car has totaled 11,957 kilometers.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

    The engine ignites on the first turn of the starter motor, the transmission works fine together with good brakes and chassis feel. The current owner has renovated the top end, the bottom part has only been inspected, where everything was in fine condition after being idle for 39 years. Brakes, rear axle, and suspensions are also either new or renovated, of course. Examining the car's beautifully better-than-new renovated underside is nice, but for a new owner planning to drive on more than just swept and summery asphalt, perhaps a bit of protective undercoating could be a good move.

  • Zustand Interieur:

    Period-correct and newly manufactured driver's seat, new fine carpets and door panels, right seat and rear seat in neat untouched original condition. Equipped today according to a period-accurate youthful belief with a sports steering wheel, tachometer, and sport seats.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

    Nice new paint in the original color Tartan Red. The fit of the doors is as reportedly original - not overly precise with a corresponding uneven gap. British mass-produced car builder charm from that time, if you will. That the door mirrors have been replaced might also play a certain role. The panels, along with the front fenders and front end, are new. Slightly wider accessory rims with modern R-tires further emphasize the car's inherent driving pleasure.

  • Zustand gesamt:

    The craftsmanship in the renovation, the smooth running of the engine, the documentation, the sliding side windows, and everything else that characterizes a Mk1, along with a tastefully period-appropriate sporty touch, make this example particularly attractive.

Fakten zum Modell

The first Mini, or "Hundkoja" as it was called in Sweden, was designed by Alec Issigonis and introduced in 1959. It was a revolutionary car with a smart, space-saving design featuring a transverse engine and wheels pushed to the corners. Issigonis envisioned it as a simple and affordable car with excellent road handling. It was produced under the BMC umbrella under various names, including Austin and Morris, as well as luxury versions like Wolseley and Riley. This was an example of "badge engineering," a common practice in the British automotive industry at the time, where only emblems and grilles were changed to align with established brands in BMC's portfolio.

One notable admirer of the Mini was John Cooper, who ran a Formula racing team using BMC engines. Recognizing the potential of the Mini's design, he proposed a performance version of the car. However, Alec Issigonis was initially resistant to the idea, as he intended the Mini to be a people's car, not a racing machine.

In 1961, John Cooper eventually got his way, and an upgraded 997cc (57 hp) engine was developed from the original 850cc (37 hp) version. Thus, the Mini Cooper was born. The Cooper featured unique upholstery, disc brakes, and a contrasting roof color.

A more powerful version, the Cooper S, was introduced in 1963 in limited production. It featured a 1071cc engine and larger, stronger disc brakes.

The year 1964 saw significant developments, with three new engine variants introduced: the Cooper S 1275cc and 970cc, as well as a more street-friendly 998cc engine for the regular Cooper. The reason for developing so many engine variants was to meet the requirements of different racing classes, which were divided based on engine displacement. Classes included limits of up to 850cc, 1000cc, 1150cc, and 1300cc, ensuring there was a Mini for every category.

Important to know before placing your bids!
  • Once you have called in an item and the reservation price is reached we want you to deposit the entire purchase amount into our client funds account before retrieval can take place.
  • When you need to retrieve a called in object we want you to examine it carefully. If you consider that the item does not match our description you do not need to complete the purchase. In this case the deposited purchase sum and the entry fee are refunded.
  • If you do not examine the item on the spot the call charge will be debited, but you do not have to complete the deal.
