Beschreibung

"The Police Bus That Took a Vacation" would be the title if the book were written by Sjöwall and Wahlöö. This vehicle was ordered by the National Police Board and assigned to the traffic police in Gothenburg in 1975. At that time, it was a black-and-white, police-equipped emergency vehicle used by the county traffic unit. After completing its service, it was decommissioned and sold to a private individual. In 1983, the current owner purchased the bus. He worked as a woodcraft teacher and had previously outfitted a Kleinbus as a camper. This time, he decided to build the ultimate camper bus. The bus was only eight years old and well-maintained since its police service. He began by lying underneath the bus, scraping the undercarriage clean, and then rust-proofing it with Dinitrol. This is why it remains in such excellent condition underneath. Following this, a carefully planned interior was built, and the bus was painted in a two-tone finish. The chosen colors were an original Volkswagen shade, Java Green, and a Saab color, Marble White.

The bus was inspected in its current form in 1985 and still looks the same today as it did then. At the same time, the speedometer was replaced with a brand new one. Thus, the bus has traveled a guaranteed 45,930 kilometers from 1985 to the present. (We do not know how far it traveled prior to this.) What makes this T2 Bay-window unique is that it was delivered new to the Swedish police with an automatic transmission and a sunroof. The special police electrical system with relays for blue lights and sirens remains intact behind the glove compartment. In 1986, a Westfalia tent specially designed for the T2 was purchased. Due to strong winds during the photoshoot, we could not set up the tent. The owner provided two older photos from the 1980s showing the tent in use. As a camper bus, it was used by the same family between 1985 and 2005. Over the years, the family visited neighboring Nordic countries as well as Holland, Germany, and other European countries. In 2005, the fuel gauge stopped working, and a slight leak was discovered in the torque converter. The engine was removed for access, but the project stalled. Since then, the bus has been garaged with the engine out until 2024. It was then transported to Fahlke Classic Cars in Åmål, specializing in classic Volkswagens. There, the torque converter leak was repaired, and major service was performed on the engine, gearbox, carburetor, brakes, etc. The vehicle was approved by Swedish vehicle inspection on 2024-10-22 without any issues. According to Swedish vintage vehicle regulations, it is now tax-exempt and exempt from periodic inspection requirements. The vehicle is registered as a light truck for one passenger with the following note in the registration document: BODYWORK: INTERIOR WITH TABLE AND SEATS FOR 5 PASSENGERS. (According to the type plate in the bus, it indicates a total of 6 passengers.) According to the current owner, this has been interpreted by both the vehicle inspection authority and roadside police checks as being approved for 1+5 passengers. This cannot be guaranteed by BWA, so the buyer should verify this interpretation independently. Since its police days, the bus is equipped with Marchal Amplilux headlights, which have a very unique construction with two reflectors, providing excellent lighting, almost like a pair of extra lights. Today, these are highly desirable and rare accessories. The last two images show examples of what these police buses looked like in service.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

Equipped with a 1.8-liter air-cooled boxer-four with dual carburetors and automatic transmission. The engine has a stated power of 68 hp and runs very smoothly, without any abnormal noises. The car feels strong and steady on the road. The engine has been recently serviced with all new components in the ignition system, new engine oil, carburetors that have been serviced and ultrasonically cleaned, etc. New muffler. Recently serviced automatic transmission with replaced seal and gaskets. In short, fully functional machine without any remarks.

  • Zustand Interieur:

Preserved interior that was tailored in 1985. The front seat covers were sewn by the well-known Swedish company PeBe AB. Professionally built camping interior on a marine plywood frame for best durability. Smart storage spaces with both a wardrobe and space under the rear seats. The small kitchenette is accessed through the rear hatch. See pictures and the film. Convertible rear and equipped with a cleverly custom-made hammock for children over the front seats. The rear cargo protector by the kitchenette is easily removable for better space when camping. In fine weather, crank open the large roof hatch for standing room. The zippers seen in the headliner were used on police vans equipped with blue lights. Westfalia awning included.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

Two-tone paintwork that was done in 1985, according to the good standards of the time, and is just as nice today as it was then. Since then, it has always been kept in a heated garage and has not been driven in the winter. We have not found any rust damage, and the underside is one of the best and most well-preserved we have seen on an unrestored T2 bus. (The brown that is visible along the lower edges/underside is rustproofing material) See the pictures. All doors have a good fit without any gaps. In terms of bodywork, nothing has been altered or rebuilt. The roof hatch runs smoothly without any issues. Older tires in good condition.

  • Zustand gesamt:

Amazingly well-preserved vintage camper van. Here you can truly talk about an unaltered retro feel in every detail.

Fakten zum Modell

Until 1965, policing in Sweden was a municipal matter. Each municipality employed and paid its own police constables. As a result, the density of police, as well as salary conditions and available equipment, varied between the different municipalities. In 1965, the police operations were nationalized under the National Police Board. This marked the beginning of an unprecedented improvement in police operations. The operations were to be standardized and maintained at a high quality across the country. Police emergency vehicles were now centrally ordered according to a precise predetermined template and specification requirements. Volkswagen's Type 2 bus became one of the most practical vehicles in police operations, and many were purchased over the years. T1, and later T2, were used as technician buses at crime scenes, traffic police had theirs, and the order police used them as riot buses. During the 1960s and 1970s, the police received substantial funding and frequently replaced their vehicles. Most police vehicles were swapped out after just 3 years of service. Particularly, the decommissioned Volkswagen Type 2 became popular in the second-hand market and many were converted into camper vans or craftsman vehicles. Today, very few of these former police buses remain in existence.
