Beschreibung

In 1987, young Mr. Hjalmarsson was 19 years old and had just gotten his driver's license. The dream of owning his first car loomed large, and it had to be something sleek and sporty in red. A classic Porsche 356 was high on his wish list. He monitored ads and emptied his piggy banks, but the price level was tough for a 19-year-old. Suddenly, an ad appeared for another sporty German car, a Karmann-Ghia Coupé. At first glance, the step between a Porsche and a Volkswagen Karmann-Ghia might seem enormous, but upon closer inspection, these cousins share the same basic DNA. Both feature the same fundamental air-cooled technology, and both have sleek body lines. What the Karmann-Ghia lacks in power and speed, it makes up for in elegance. A deal was made. The chassis had been recently restored, and the focus was on painting. Red it had to be. After the basic work was done, the coupé was transported to a paint shop in Arvika.

The car was used frequently in the early years. Over time, family life took priority, and other things became more important. The coupé was stored in the barn and only brought out on special occasions. The last time it was used was 15 years ago for a school graduation. Since then, the car has remained untouched and stored in the barn. The house is now being sold, and there is no space for the car. The owner admits that selling his very first car comes with a touch of sadness but adds that everything has its time.

We believe the original color might be Neptune Blue L47, but we’re not entirely sure as the type plate is hard to read. The car should be seen as a reasonable project that requires some work to get it back on the road.

The odometer shows 91,780 km. We don’t know if the mileage is accurate as these odometers roll over at 100,000 km.
The car has had six owners, including dealers, since it was first registered in October 1966. The current owner has had it since 1987. The car comes with a spare wheel with older diagonal tires and an instruction manual. The original jack and wheel tools are missing. Two car keys are included. (The last picture shows the car in 1987 before it was repainted).

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

The car has not been driven or started in the last 15 years. We made a very brief attempt to start it, mostly to see that the engine turns over as it should. The engine fired up with the aid of a spray of starting fluid. See the video. It needs a start-up service and an overhaul of the fuel system before another starting attempt is made. A new 6-volt starting battery purchased in 2024 is included. The car lacks functioning brakes, so count on needing a brake overhaul. Equipped with front disc brakes. The car rolls very easily and has some function in the parking brake. The tires hold air, but are old and need to be replaced. The muffler looks a bit rusty; we haven't tried tapping on it.

  • Zustand Interieur:

The interior appears to be the original one the car came with in the fall of 1966. It is worn and needs detailing and renovation to look really nice. Everything seems to be correct and in the right place; nothing has been replaced or modified. The dashboard was painted black in 1987 in connection with a change to a red color. The headliner is heavily soiled with holes under the sun visor. There are traces of damage by rodents. We lifted all the carpets in the car and took photos. The base plate looks very nice. See the pictures. A model car is included in the glove compartment. Equipped with a functioning Blaupunkt car radio.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

Repainted red in 1987. There are bubbles in the paint and surface rust where the paint has peeled off. The body seems straight and nice, however. The driver's door sags slightly and needs to be lifted a bit when closing. The underside of the floor pan was rust-proofed in the 1980s and looks good, from what could be seen. However, the sill boxes need to be replaced due to rust damage. There might be more issues to address than what we found. See the pictures.

  • Zustand gesamt:

Good project car with a fun history as the current owner's first own car. Here, you can renovate the brakes, replace the sill boxes, and perform a service overhaul, then inspect and use the car with ongoing improvements over time.

Fakten zum Modell

Built by Karmann on Volkswagen's chassis, with a body designed by Italian design house Ghia, the sleek Karmann-Ghia was introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1955. Series production began the following year, and it wasn’t long before work started on a convertible version, which appeared in 1957. In 1961, the front was redesigned with larger grilles and headlights positioned higher up. At the same time, it received larger rear lights and wheel housings. The 44 hp 1500 engine, introduced in 1967, was fundamentally the same as in Type 3, but with a different placement of the cooling fan. That same year also saw the introduction of front disc brakes, a wider rear track, a compensating spring over the rear axle, a dual-circuit braking system, and four-bolt wheels instead of five.
