"A drivable restoration project that can become anything from a Rat Rod to a pristine folk-home classic, depending on how the new owner envisions their PV 444A. This is an early model with the right attributes, but it does require work."

Beschreibung

According to reports, this car was originally sold new to a priest. In October 1965, it was acquired by its second owner, who was a student at the time but later became a pastor.

By the late 1960s, the car was stored in a barn, and after being moved between different barns over the years, it was finally taken over by the son-in-law in October 2011.

Two years ago, a mechanical overhaul was carried out, including:

A new electrical system
A new carburetor
New brakes
New exhaust system, among other components
The engine received fresh oil but was otherwise not opened or modified. The car was started again for the first time in over 50 years.

Included with the car are various used parts, but the front grille, front bumper, and some additional components are missing.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

Starts easily and runs smoothly with a calm, well-functioning engine. Mechanically in good condition.

During a short test drive in a residential area, the car performed surprisingly well, with all major functions working properly. However, the suspension and handling should be reviewed.

Some electrical work is needed, including installing the missing turn signals/semaphores (which are included) to make the car ready for a registration inspection.

It has not been inspected on a lift, but overall, it is a project car that requires work while remaining sound in its vital components.

  • Zustand Interieur:

    Worn original interior.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

The paint is likely original but in poor condition after years of barn storage. There are dents and repairs, but no severe rust.

The glass is intact, and the lighting components are functional and in usable condition.

However, the grille, front bumper, and some other parts are missing.

  • Zustand gesamt:

Now it’s time for a new owner to take over the baton. The car has been started up, is drivable, and is in surprisingly good working condition, but it still needs upgrading—the level of restoration is up to the next owner.

Ultimately, this is a vehicle with iconic status, a Swedish classic, and a historically significant piece of automotive heritage.

Tanken var att renovera "svärfars gamla bil". Det var kul att få igång den igen men tiden räcker inte till och nu får ny ägare ta vid.

Fakten zum Modell

The Volvo PV 444 is a true classic, with volumes written about its history. It was first unveiled at Volvo’s exhibition in the Royal Tennis Hall on September 1, 1944. Many people sensed that World War II was nearing its end, and Volvo wanted to be ready for the post-war market. However, it wasn’t until early 1947 that deliveries could finally begin.

Numerous obstacles and delays arose—raw material shortages during and after the war being a significant challenge. Additionally, Volvo initially sold the PV 444 at a loss, as many pre-orders had been placed at the 1944 introductory price, which quickly proved too low.

Nevertheless, production got underway, and the 444 hit the roads—not only in Sweden but also internationally. Volvo’s new family car found its way into export markets, initially to neighboring countries and later to Europe, the U.S., and beyond.

In total, 196,005 units of the PV 444 were produced before it was phased out. By then, Volvo had already introduced the Amazon in 1957, and the PV 444 was upgraded in 1958 to become the PV 544.
