Beschreibung
Today, the car comes with documentation including the original purchase contract, vehicle specifications, and a so-called Protect-O-Plate showing the owner’s name. In 1973, Barbro moved back to Sweden, and the Camaro was shipped aboard the Wallenius Lines vessel Atlantic Cinderella. Unfortunately, the journey did not go smoothly. When the Camaro arrived in Stockholm, it had suffered body damage and some accessories had been stolen. Barbro was devastated and stood crying at the harbor. A taxi driver comforted her, and that moment became life-changing — they found each other and are still married today.
While the Camaro carried a Swedish flag sticker on the rear panel during its years in the United States, it has worn USA stickers while in Sweden. Mounted beneath the Swedish rear license plate is a newer New York plate, purely for fun, but one of the original blue-and-yellow New York plates from the car’s time there still remains and will accompany the car upon sale.
Barbro only drove her Chevrolet during the summer months, and the odometer today reads 44,841 miles, equivalent to 72,165 km. The odometer may have rolled over, but considering how the car has been used and its overall condition, it is entirely possible that this is the genuine mileage. During 2017–2018, her son was registered as the owner, although this appears to have been only a formal change on paper.
Barbro is now 88 years old, and due to her health, the car is being sold on her behalf by her legal guardian. Several documents and photographs accompany the car, although there is no service book. Two sets of keys are included. The car is drivable, but given how little it has been used in recent years, a light mechanical inspection is likely advisable.

Zustand technisch
The car starts and runs well, both in terms of the engine and transmission. However, it has seen very little use in recent years, and during the test drive it stalled a couple of times due to a slightly low idle speed. The car is therefore drivable, but a service inspection is recommended.
The remarkably clean engine bay shows that this car has been very well cared for, and it also highlights just how original the car is. No unusual noises were heard during the test drive, and electrical functions such as the lights, fan, and radio were tested and found to be working properly. The window cranks were also tested, although the rear side window needed a little assistance by hand to roll back up. -
Zustand Interieur
The interior is in good, well-preserved original condition, with no visible damage to the door panels, headliner, or seats. The carpet is somewhat faded. Non-original rubber floor mats have been placed over the carpet on both the driver’s and passenger’s sides.
In the trunk, carpeting has been fitted over parts of the floor. Some surface rust is visible on the trunk floor. -
Zustand Exterieur
When the car was brought from the USA to Sweden in 1973, the left front fender was damaged and had to be repainted. The car also received period-style “body paint” along the lower sections of the body sides. There are a few minor blemishes, including a small dent on the right rear wheel arch and some other minor paint imperfections, but the paint and body remain remarkably well-preserved for such an original car.
There appears to be some minor rust on the rocker panel in front of the left rear wheel, and there is also some rust visible in the passenger-side door jamb — please refer to the photos. Barbro had the vinyl roof reupholstered at some point; it is unclear exactly when, but it remains in good condition today.
The chrome trim appears to be original and therefore shows signs of age, but it still complements the car’s authentic overall condition very well. The grille has been touched up with black paint, something that today might perhaps have been done differently. While many owners long ago removed the mud flaps — which were legally required when the car was imported to Sweden in the 1970s — this Camaro still retains them.
The original wheel covers were preserved, and another set is currently fitted to the car. Unfortunately, the whereabouts of the correct original wheel covers are unknown today. -
Zustand gesamt
Being able to purchase a car from 1968 that has had the same owner since new is, of course, extremely unusual. The fact that it is also such a desirable car as a first-generation Chevrolet Camaro, originally purchased new in Manhattan, makes it a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
But beyond the wonderful story behind the Camaro’s history, it is also a functional and usable car. The minor imperfections found on the bodywork can today easily be seen as part of the car’s character and history, especially considering the remarkably untouched and original condition it has retained in so many respects.

Fakten zum Modell
Many Chevrolet models have historically started with the letter “C,” and GM is said to have considered around 5,000 different name proposals. In the end, the name Camaro was chosen because it sounded vaguely European and exotic.
When sales began in September 1966 for the 1967 model year, the engine lineup ranged from a 3.8-liter inline-six producing 140 horsepower to a 5.36-liter V8 with 275 horsepower. The first generation of the Chevrolet Camaro remained in production until 1969. Chevrolet continued to use the Camaro nameplate all the way until December 2023, when the final example of the sixth generation was produced.
