"A pleasant and cheerful convertible for summer drives in the open air. Well-maintained condition, recently inspected, serviced, and in good working order. Ready to go."

Beschreibung

This car was imported from “Sunny California,” specifically San Diego, and was registered for road use in Sweden on May 7, 1990. For nearly 36 years, it remained with a member of the Fiat Classic Club, who drove it sparingly. It was later donated to the club as a gift. The board decided to sell the car at auction and has taken care to ensure it is in a good, roadworthy, and trouble-free condition at the time of sale.
The car is largely rust-free and has recently undergone a thorough three-month inspection and refurbishment by a well-known enthusiast and club member with experience of these models. It has previously been repainted in yellow, likely in the USA. While there, the original 1438 cc engine was replaced with a 1592 cc engine from 1973. The car is registered as a 1971 model, but most indications suggest it is actually a 1970.

During the refurbishment, the timing belt, tensioner, and water pump have been replaced, as well as the clutch assembly including bell housing and release bearing. It has a new radiator, new ignition components, and all engine hoses have been replaced. A new battery has been fitted, and the car has been serviced with fresh fluids and filters. The brakes have been overhauled with new hoses and pads all around. There is a new front bumper and a new right rear bumper, along with new Farina badges and new tires. The driver’s seat and headrest have been reupholstered, and the paint has been ceramic coated.

The car is insured through MHRF, inspected, and ready to drive. One set of keys is included, along with an original owner’s manual from the USA and a Haynes workshop manual.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch

Starts easily and runs smoothly and quietly. During a test drive on smaller gravel roads, the car felt responsive and tight in terms of steering, clutch, gear changes, road holding, and brakes. It responded well to throttle input and more spirited driving. As it has recently been thoroughly gone through with many new and essential parts, its functionality should remain good going forward.

It was not inspected on a lift during the photo session, but it had been checked underneath during the refurbishment, where it was found to be in good condition. What could be seen now confirms this. There were slight indications around the outer sills, but nothing serious.

  • Zustand Interieur

The interior appears to be in original condition with a nice patina from use. Comfortable seats, with the driver’s seat having been refurbished. Attractive door panels and trim, as well as good carpets. The rear seat has some damage at the top center.

The steering wheel, controls, dashboard, and gauges are in fine original condition, with nice wood details. Everything appears to function as it should, except for the clock. The odometer reads 6,278 (Swedish miles), but the actual mileage is uncertain, and the gauge is likely to have been replaced.

A newer JVC cassette stereo is fitted, with speakers mounted in the rear seat.

  • Zustand Exterieur

A nice and glossy older repaint with normal signs of use, including a few paint bubbles and minor blemishes. Chrome, glass, trim, badges, and lighting details are in good condition, with some parts replaced. Attractive wheels and hubcaps fitted with new tires.
The engine bay and trunk are in good condition. The convertible top is in good shape, along with a vinyl cover in typical U.S. style, showing only light wear. It is easy to operate.

  • Zustand gesamt

A model produced over 18 years across three decades, today appreciated both as an enthusiast’s car and a classic with roots in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Here we have a lively 55-year-old presented in sunny yellow. Otherwise in a fine, largely original condition, with some updates, well-sorted and functional mechanics, and an attractive exterior. A lovely classic for summer drives.

Fakten zum Modell

The Fiat 124 was produced between 1966 and 1975. The Spider version continued in production until 1985, with the final years marketed as the Pininfarina Spidereuropa.

Fiat achieved great success in the 1950s and 60s with its small cars, but its mid-size models also performed well. The Model 124, which succeeded the 1300/1500 model (known in Sweden as “Juventus”), became a major success. The new model followed a conventional layout with an inline four-cylinder engine, front-mounted engine and rear-wheel drive, and a unitary box-shaped body. It was awarded European Car of the Year in 1967 and was also built under license in many countries.

The range included traditional four- and five-door versions, as well as two-door variants, a Coupé, and a Cabriolet (Spider). The Berlina sedan, which became the volume model, was introduced in March 1966, followed later the same year by the Familiare estate. For the 1969 model year, a larger engine and a more aggressive front design were introduced under the “Special” designation. In 1970, the Special T followed, where “T” stood for Twin-Cam, using the same engine found in the two-door versions. The Coupé was designed in-house by Fiat and presented at the Geneva Motor Show in 1967.

The year before, at the Turin Motor Show in 1966, Fiat had unveiled the 124 Spider, designed and built by Pininfarina. It featured Fiat’s pride, the twin-cam DOHC engine, along with a five-speed gearbox. As the other versions were gradually discontinued—with the Coupé ending in 1977—the Spider was also withdrawn from the European market. However, production continued for export to the U.S., where it remained popular. From 1982, Fiat stepped back and the Spider was thereafter produced and marketed as the Pininfarina SpiderEuropa. Sales in Europe resumed under this name, but production finally ended in 1985.

During its production, the Spider shared assembly lines with models such as the Alfa Romeo Spider and the Peugeot 404 and 504 Cabriolets. In 1972–73, a special version called the Abarth Rally was built, featuring independent rear suspension, twin carburetors, 128 hp, lightweight body materials, and a hardtop—today a highly sought-after variant.

In total, approximately 198,000 Fiat 124 Spiders were produced between the 1967 and 1985 model years.
