Volvo 240 VOC "Teknikens Värld" — 1989

Built by Teknikens Värld Magazine in 1991 for the Volvo Original Cup Racing. The build and the journey toward overall victory in both SSK’s Class 1 and the VOC series were documented in the magazine. The fact that the car still exists and continues to compete successfully today is a true cultural achievement.

Beschreibung

Built by Teknikens Värld in 1991 as a Volvo Original Cup racing car.

The build process was documented in the magazine. At the start of the project, the editorial team could hardly imagine the success that lay ahead. According to articles from the time, there was a fair amount of skepticism among those involved. The magazine’s test director, Gunnar Dackevall, famously exclaimed:

“What a clunker!”

Five months later, he was lifting the trophy for overall victory in the Volvo Original Cup.

Background:

In 1991, Teknikens Värld decided to build a car for the newly established Volvo Original Cup (VOC) racing class. The relatively new set of rules showed promise, and the editorial team sensed this could develop into a true grassroots motorsport. They chose a 1989 Volvo 244 – less than two years old at the time.

One early challenge was the car’s automatic transmission. This was solved by sourcing an older 4-speed M40 manual gearbox from a scrapyard. From a Volvo dealer, they purchased a tuning kit for SEK 7,000, which included a high-flow cylinder head, a sportier camshaft, and a freer-flowing exhaust system. The engine was bored to the maximum allowed oversize (+0.5 mm), and the cylinder head was skimmed by the regulation maximum of 0.5 mm to increase compression.

Further modifications were not permitted under the rules.

The total cost for these upgrades — including the SEK 7,000 tuning kit — was SEK 18,000. The full journey, from purchase to rebuild and eventual victory, was covered in a running feature series in the magazine.

Once the series was won and the trophies displayed proudly on the editorial shelf, the next idea was born: let the readers compete to win the car!

A three-part contest was launched, leading to a final showdown between 10 selected participants. They were sent to Ring Knutstorp in southern Sweden, where they had to obtain a racing license and pass both practical and theoretical tests. A young man from Örebro won the car — by a single point.

The current owner purchased the car in 2008 and has continued to race it. He has, among other achievements, won the Sprint Cup organized by the Upper Northern Motorsport Federation (Övre Norra Bilsportförbundet).

Included with the car:

A set of gravel tires on Volvo Turbo wheels (5 wheels including spare)

A set of 5 rally ice tires with 6 mm stud protrusion, also mounted on Volvo Turbo wheels

The car passed its technical inspection on April 16, 2025, with two minor conditional faults related to the indicators, both of which have since been fixed

The speedometer is functional, but the odometer is broken and does not record mileage

A complete rally vehicle folder/documentation is included

From the vehicle’s registration certificate, the following notes are listed:

T31B: Engine modified

T31C: Engine output stated as per information

T71E: Roll cage installed

T71ZO: Standard rally car. The vehicle is specially equipped for use in rally competitions. Roll cage installed. Front seats and seatbelts replaced

(This designation is used for passenger vehicles adapted for competition use, known as standard rally cars. The code is applied by the inspection authority.)

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

Engine: B230F with an H-cam, original ignition and fuel ECU units optimized by MPRE. Equipped with a 2.5-inch exhaust system and a race catalytic converter. The engine has been dyno tested, showing 180 hp at the crank — equivalent to approximately 135 hp at the rear wheels.

Transmission: 5-speed M47 gearbox with a Sachs clutch.

Rear Axle: 4.10 gear ratio, without a limited-slip differential.

  • Zustand Interieur:

The term strictly business truly applies here — everything non-essential has been stripped away. The original door panels, rear seat, and headliner remain, but the floor mat has been removed.

The car is equipped with a roll cage, Sparco racing seats, and rally harnesses. The driver’s seat is mounted on adjustable rails for forward and backward movement.

A fire extinguisher and co-driver’s map light are installed.

The well-worn rally steering wheel adds a touch of history and nostalgia — see photos for details.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

On the outside, it looks exactly as it did in 1991 when Teknikens Värld’s motorsport-minded staff raced it in the Volvo Original Cup. The current owner has received a special exemption to compete with the car in its original period-correct livery — see photo of the exemption document.

Visible scrapes and dents reflect its many years of racing, but nothing beyond what’s expected for a well-used competition car.

  • Zustand gesamt:

A historically significant and still competitive VOC car.

Kommentar vom Besitzer

Volvo Original Cup (VOC) is a motorsport class for standard, road-registered Volvo 240, 740, and 940 models. The disciplines include rally, racing, hill climb, and ice racing — all under the same rulebook. The concept is to give beginners a chance to try different motorsport branches at a relatively low cost.

The class has its roots in the early 1980s with the Volvo Turbo Cup, but the true beginning of Volvo Original came in 1989, with the first series launched in 1990. Since then, VOC has become an institution in Swedish motorsport.

What sets it apart from other series — which often come and go — is the balanced regulation that has been in place from the start. It allows for newer Volvo models while ensuring that older cars remain competitive. This is almost unheard of in motorsport, where a chassis is rarely competitive for more than a few seasons, and one-make series tend to fade after 4–5 years.

Volvo Original has built a reputation as a breeding ground for young, talented drivers by giving them the chance to compete at a high level on equal terms — both against fellow newcomers and more experienced veterans.

In January 2013, the class was renamed VOC Mekonomen Rally.
