Beschreibung

Built from a road-going M3 shell in the early ’90s, this car was transformed into a spec closer to Group A regulations—just as that rule set was being phased out in favor of the Super Touring series. It competed in Sweden in the SSK series' Yokohama Cup, and later—with an upgraded engine and gearbox—in the TimeAttack series with its current owner, Johan Svensson.

Johan is paralyzed from the shoulders down following an endurocross accident. He retains arm movement but has no control over his fingers. While still in the hospital, he began thinking practically about how he might continue driving—and racing. His solution: steering via a custom handlebar setup with extremely sensitive quick-ratio input, accelerating with a twisting motion of the right hand, braking with a similar motion on the left, and shifting gears by inhaling and exhaling into a pressure-sensitive mouthpiece connected to the sequential racing gearbox.

The very idea of driving a car that way—let alone racing it—seems nearly impossible to an outsider. But Johan did it, and for several years, competing in the SSK, BMW Cup, and TimeAttack series with genuinely competitive pace. I’ve personally seen him race during my time working with the TV production of the series.

The specialized adaptive equipment for disabled drivers remains and can be reinstalled in this car or fitted to another. As it stands today, the car has been restored and returned to standard racing configuration.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

The engine originally started as an S14 2.5 EVO unit, which Köhler Racing has built into a 2.9-liter naturally aspirated powerhouse. A stroker crank first increased the displacement to 2.7 liters, followed by overboring and new liners to bring it up to 2.9 liters—resulting in an output of nearly 400 horsepower. The engine has very low runtime, with just over one hour of operation since it was built.

The gearbox is a Hollinger 6-speed sequential, the same model used in BMW’s Super Touring cars, paired with a BMW Motorsport Gemini differential. An additional differential with a different final drive ratio is included as well. The engine is mapped and tuned for ethanol, offering improved cooling and increased power output. The injectors have recently been tested, cleaned, and serviced.

  • Zustand Interieur:

Newly restored to standard racing specification according to the regulations of its era. Seat, harness, window net, and driver position—all present and correct. Functional, clean, and neatly executed.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

Finished in a striking livery reminiscent of the M3s from the DTM—Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft—of the ’80s and ’90s. An original-spec 2.5 EVO rear wing, mirrors, and exhaust tip highlight the car’s exterior, complemented by two sets of 9" x 17" Dynamics Pro Race wheels: one fitted with slicks, the other with rain tires.

  • Zustand gesamt:

A beautiful and classic M3 E30, set up for pure, unfiltered racing joy on the track. While the car is not currently FIA historic-classified due to its engine and gearbox configuration, the value of the installed components could be exchanged for homologated parts, making it eligible for an HTP (Historic Technical Passport) and thus able to compete in historic racing under current regulations—such as Group A.

Alternatively, it’s a thrilling and rewarding machine in its current form, perfect for track days, club racing, or time attack events. Internationally, there are also racing series that would welcome the car as it stands today.

Fakten zum Modell

The BMW M3 E30 was launched in 1987 as a road-going homologation model to allow the factory to compete in Group A racing, primarily in the DTM (Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft). It was engineered from the ground up with motorsport in mind—featuring a lightweight body, flared wheel arches, improved aerodynamics, and, most notably, the high-revving 2.3-liter four-cylinder S14 engine.

In its debut season in 1987, the M3 E30 clinched the DTM championship with Eric van de Poele behind the wheel. And that was just the beginning. During its competitive career, the car went on to win over 1,500 races worldwide and claimed numerous championships.

The M3 E30 quickly became a fan favorite thanks to its balance, precision, and reliability—and it’s still considered one of the most successful touring cars of all time.
