BMW 730iL V8 E32 — 1993

An unusual combination of the long-wheelbase 7 Series, a small-displacement V8, and a manual gearbox—making it a somewhat less complex proposition for long-term ownership as a restrained and elegant vintage luxury car.

"Discreet, comfortable, and endowed with ample performance. This is a car that offers something for both the style-conscious driver and the value-minded enthusiast—a rare gem with appeal from more than one perspective."

Beschreibung

The car was delivered new to its first owner in Germany, Alfred Schmidt of Alzenau, Bavaria, shortly before Christmas 1992 by BMW dealer A. Schramm GmbH, located outside Frankfurt. Just over three years later, in February 1996, it was imported to Sweden and first registered for road use on 11 March 1996. At that time, the odometer showed 126,500 kilometres.

The first Swedish owner, based in Karlstad, drove the car sparingly and maintained it in accordance with the service schedule until 2020, when he sold the 730. The most recent service recorded in the service book was carried out in 2020 at 197,500 kilometres. Today, the odometer reads 209,900 kilometres, and the current owner has covered less than 10,000 kilometres during nearly five years of ownership. He has also carried out the servicing himself.

The most recent roadworthiness inspection was passed on 16 May 2025.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch

The car offers a pleasingly engaging, driver-focused feel, complemented by the strong torque delivery of BMW’s compact aluminium V8. Today, it is this engine—paired with a durable and easy-to-maintain manual gearbox—that makes the car particularly appealing, especially in combination with the long-wheelbase Lang body style. The brakes and chassis perform well and inspire confidence on the road.

  • Zustand Interieur

The interior is in remarkably good condition and feels fresher than one might expect from a car with over 200,000 kilometres. The door panels and headliner are well preserved, with only a small stain noted on the latter, and the air conditioning cools effectively. The right-hand luggage compartment trim panel is missing.

The traditional BMW tool kit is complete, and an original permanently mounted mobile phone remains with the car for anyone wishing to recreate the full high-end- luxury car experience of the 1990s in authentic detail.

  • Zustand Exterieur

The exterior presents well in its original colour and remains an attractive, honest example. Condition is consistent with the mileage, with only minor stone chips on the bonnet. The bumpers, plastic trim, and chrome details are all in good order, with only light scuffing noted at the rear.

The car rides on a set of new Continental tyres mounted to undamaged original 16-inch alloy wheels. An intriguing detail is that the supplying dealer’s decal from Germany still occupies the space where the model badge would normally sit. Did the first owner choose to delete the badge when ordering the car? Perhaps Alfred preferred not to advertise that he was driving a 7 Series with the smallest V8 in the range. Whatever the reason, that understated specification is precisely what makes this car all the more distinctive and appealing today.

  • Zustand gesamt

A 7 Series worth preserving and cherishing. Unusual and intriguing specifications have always held a special appeal, and it is often these rare variants that prove most interesting to enthusiasts and collectors in the years to come.

Fakten zum Modell

The BMW 7 Series E32 was introduced in the autumn of 1986 as BMW’s direct challenger in the top-tier luxury car segment. Designed by Ercole Spada under the leadership of legendary chief designer Claus Luthe, the model was immediately praised for its elegant lines, distinctive L-shaped rear lights, and exceptionally high technical standards.

The original entry-level model was the 730i, initially powered by BMW’s proven and well-regarded M30 inline-six engine. As the model evolved, however, the competitive landscape changed. In response to increasing pressure from rival manufacturers, BMW introduced an all-new generation of advanced V8 engines in 1992, giving rise to the 730i V8 and its newly developed M60B30 powerplant. This sophisticated all-aluminium engine displaced just under three litres and featured double overhead camshafts for each cylinder bank as well as four valves per cylinder.

Compact and technically advanced, it produced 218 horsepower and 290 Nm of torque, while delivering sharper throttle response and a more refined, prestigious engine note than the outgoing six-cylinder unit. To visually distinguish the new V8 models—introduced alongside the larger 740i—BMW equipped them with a wider kidney grille, a feature previously reserved exclusively for the flagship 750i V12.

Until production of the E32 generation ended in the spring of 1994, both the six-cylinder and V8-powered versions of the 730i were sold concurrently in certain markets. It was the V8 model, however, that pointed the way forward for BMW’s future engine development. Today, the E32 730i V8 is regarded as an important milestone in BMW history, representing the marque’s transition to modern lightweight V8 engines, while also enjoying a well-deserved reputation as a modern classic.
