"It may not have won a Guldbagge Award, but few films have left such a lasting impression and attracted as much attention as Kjell Sundvall’s debut feature. This particular Swedish welfare-state-era classic played a memorable supporting role in the film. There are many scenes that remain etched in our memory, perhaps most notably the famous car-wash scene. Today, the car presents in good, usable condition, although there are details that would benefit from attention and further improvement."

Beschreibung

This vehicle was first registered for road use on 15 June 1977. The current owner acquired it in October 2003, both as an enthusiast’s car and because of its history as a movie car. Over the years, it has been driven sparingly and kept as close to its original specification as possible. Among the work carried out was a repaint in its original reddish-brown colour (code 80). The automatic transmission has also been replaced with a manual gearbox featuring overdrive.

The car was inspected on 17 April this year and received a number of remarks requiring attention. It is equipped with a tow hitch.

As a piece of trivia, the current owner had the opportunity to meet Claire Wikholm and Rolf Skoglund, who were reunited with the car and even took a ride in it during Claire Wikholm’s appearance on Stjärnorna på Slottet (“Stars at the Castle”). It was a special and heartfelt reunion. Claire was also driven to the castle in the car, making a nostalgic entrance as part of the programme’s filming.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch

The engine starts easily and ran well. During a short test drive on local roads, the car felt sound in terms of steering, clutch, gearbox, and brakes. However, there are a number of details that should be reviewed and addressed.

The vehicle was not inspected on a lift, but the vital components appeared to be in good condition based on a visual assessment.

  • Zustand Interieur

The interior is original and shows normal signs of use and age, although the front seats have been replaced. The dashboard has cracks, and some functions—including the heater fan and horn—are currently inoperative. The odometer has also been non-functional for many years, although the speedometer is working.

  • Zustand Exterieur

The car has been repainted and retains a good gloss, although there are areas where bubbling has begun to appear beneath the paintwork. Otherwise, the condition is generally good with regard to the glass, trim, emblems, and lighting components.

The wheels and tyres are in good condition, and the hubcaps are included. The engine bay and luggage compartment show normal signs of use and age.

The original mounting brackets for the caravan towing mirrors are still fitted, although the mirror arms and mirrors themselves are missing.

  • Zustand gesamt

Here is a unique opportunity to “kill two birds with one stone” and acquire two Swedish classics at once: automotive history in the form of the Volvo 245, and film history through At Least We Had Good Weather. Together, they embody the closing years of the 1970s and the final chapter of Sweden’s welfare-state era.

Few vehicles evoke so many memories and nostalgic associations. A car with genuine enthusiast and collector appeal, offering a rare connection to both Swedish motoring heritage and popular culture.

Fakten zum Modell

Volvo’s estate cars are a legend in their own right. The story began with the Volvo Duett in 1953, followed by the Amazon estate in 1963 and the Volvo 145 in 1968, which was subsequently updated and renamed the 245 in 1975. From 1983 onwards, all versions carried the 240 designation, regardless of the number of doors. Whatever the badge, the model remains a true icon in the Swedish national consciousness.

Whether it was the taxi that brought you home from the maternity ward, a family trip to IKEA, or summer journeys to the countryside with grandparents, almost every Swede has some connection to these cars.

For the 1977 model year, the Swedish motoring magazine Teknikens Värld wrote in its publication All Cars 1977: “Those seeking even more power and a more refined interior should choose the DL version, equipped with the B21 engine and a more comfortable driver’s seat height adjustment. Spaciousness, strong performance, and class-leading load capacity are among the qualities that have steadily propelled the 245 to its leading position.”

Over the years, numerous variants and updates were introduced. When the new 740 model arrived in 1984, many assumed that the venerable 240 had reached the end of the road. Instead, Volvo shifted up another gear and continued to develop the 240 alongside its successor.

According to production records, a total of 2,685,171 Volvo 240-series cars were built. Of these, 1,483,399 were four-door saloons, 242,621 were two-door models, and 959,151 were five-door estates.

Today, the Volvo 245 stands as one of the most recognisable and beloved cars in Swedish automotive history—a practical family car that evolved into a cultural icon.
