"Once again, we have had the pleasure of inspecting and driving one of these low-mileage, single-owner Volvos in remarkably original condition. There is something special about these cars from Sweden’s welfare-state era—carefully used, well looked after, and invariably accompanied by a folder of history and documentation.

This particular example has been enjoyed as intended while also leading a relatively gentle life. There are a few details that would benefit from attention, but overall it is a very fine, well-preserved, and thoroughly cared-for vehicle."

Beschreibung

This vehicle was first registered for road use on 30 March 1988. On that very day, the current owner took delivery of the car from Bilia and has remained its sole owner ever since. She has driven the vehicle carefully and sparingly throughout its life.

The odometer currently shows 98,680 km. A faithful companion over the years, the car has spent most of its life in and around its local residential neighbourhood. Of those kilometres, fewer than 10,000 have been covered since 2015. Throughout its life, the vehicle has been regularly inspected, serviced, and maintained as required.

The car is equipped with an electric engine heater and a cabin power outlet.

Included with the vehicle is a binder containing inspection reports, documentation, and receipts. At the time of inspection, the owner’s manual and service booklets could not be located, but they are expected to be found. The car comes with two sets of keys. A new set of original protective floor mats is also included.

The vehicle has been inspected and is ready to drive.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch

The engine starts easily and ran smoothly during inspection. A slight squeal from the fan belt was noted. During a short test drive through a residential area and on smaller country roads, the steering, road manners, brakes, and automatic transmission all performed well. The transmission shifted smoothly, and the kickdown function operated as intended.

The overdrive warning light remained illuminated while driving. We did not reach speeds at which the overdrive would normally engage or disengage, and its operation should therefore be checked. A slight squeal was also noticed under braking, most likely due to the installation of brand-new brake pads.

The vehicle was not inspected on a lift, but the visible vital components appeared to be in good condition. Following an advisory note during a previous vehicle inspection, one of the underbody crossmembers has since been repaired.

  • Zustand Interieur

The interior is in exceptionally well-preserved original condition, trimmed in blue velour with supportive and comfortable seating both front and rear. For most of its life, the car has effectively been used by a single driver, which is reflected in the condition of the cabin.

The door panels, interior trim, and headliner are all in excellent condition. The original carpet set has also been very well preserved, having always been protected by overmats.

The steering wheel, controls, dashboard, and instruments are all in fine condition and function as intended. The car is equipped with its original Volvo cassette radio, front-door speakers, and a practical cassette storage compartment.

  • Zustand Exterieur

The car retains its attractive and glossy original mid-blue paintwork, with some minor touch-up work carried out over the years. There are a few cosmetic blemishes, including a scratch and slight signs of surface rust. Early indications of corrosion were also noted around the wheel arch edges and in the seams adjoining the sills.

The glass, trim, emblems, and lighting components are all in very good condition. The wheels and hubcaps present well, and the tyres are in good condition.

Both the engine bay and luggage compartment are clean, tidy, and well preserved.

  • Zustand gesamt

This car is a fine representative of both Volvo and its era. Approaching its fortieth anniversary, it has weathered the decades remarkably well and stands as a testament to Volvo’s long-standing slogan: “Volvo’s value endures.”

Over the years, many Volvo models have become sought-after collector’s items. It is usually the special editions and high-performance variants that first capture enthusiasts’ attention. Eventually, however, the faithful workhorses follow—the cars that quietly did their job and were once a familiar sight on every road. Then, almost without notice, they disappear and become missed. After all, these are the cars that most people have their memories tied to.

When a car like this also happens to be a low-mileage example preserved in such fine condition, it becomes more than just a well-kept Volvo. It is a genuine classic with both automotive and cultural-historical significance.

Fakten zum Modell

For the 1975 model year, Volvo updated the 140 series into the 240, a model that would become a true icon in the Swedish national consciousness. Whether it was the taxi that brought you home from the maternity ward, a family trip to IKEA, or journeys to the countryside with grandparents, almost everyone in Sweden has some connection to these cars.

Over the years, numerous variants and updates were introduced. When the new 740 model arrived in 1984, many assumed that the venerable 240 had reached the end of the road. Instead, Volvo shifted up another gear and continued to refine and develop the 240 alongside its successor.

A wide range of engines became available throughout the model’s production run, including petrol, diesel, and turbocharged versions. The 240 was offered in two-door, four-door, and five-door estate body styles, as well as in various trim levels ranging from sporting to more luxurious specifications. Yet the most authentic versions are perhaps the DL and GL models—cars that became an integral part of everyday life in Sweden’s welfare-state era.

The GL was originally positioned as a more upscale model, but over time it evolved into the entry-level variant. From 1981 onwards, it was equipped with Volvo’s B23A engine.

There were certainly faster and more exciting cars on the market, but few could match the Volvo 240’s blend of simplicity, durability, quality, and safety. It was, above all, a practical and dependable family car.

For the 1988 model year, the GL became the entry-level version and was now equipped with a catalytic converter. More than 2.8 million Volvo 240s were produced during the model’s lifetime, and even today—more than 30 years after production ended—they remain a common sight on the roads.

According to production records, a total of 2,685,171 Volvo 240-series cars were built. Of these, 1,483,399 were four-door saloons, 242,621 were two-door models, and 959,151 were five-door estates.
