"It doesn't get much more hardcore in the aircooled Volkswagen culture than this."

Beschreibung

It was delivered new in June 1950 by Wahlbin's Car Dealership in Linköping to a master painter named John Martinsson in Bergs Slussar. Later that year, Martinsson appears to have registered it under his company, Martinsson's Painting AB. Regardless, he drove his Volkswagen for over 12 years, servicing it regularly, and then stored it away in 1962. After a long period of inactivity, a new owner bought the car in the 70s or 80s with an ambition to restore and register it. Fortunately, this ambition faded away – and the current owner searching for a really nice Split – purchased the car in 1991 despite it not matching the description he had been given. But soon he realized that it actually was, really nice in the sense that it was fully complete and untouched. And it is here and now that something happens in the world of classic cars in general and the subculture of the brand in particular. After a couple of years in the garage with technical and mechanical checks, the car was inspected for registration in 1993, and the same year the current owner went to the Bug Run event with his untouched Split. At that time, the concept of "rat look" did not really exist, but after the reception at the event, the owner became aware that this car should be preserved. Whether it is a trendsetter or not, this particular Volkswagen with its small, almost non-existent, split rear window and worn appearance changed the perspectives and thoughts on how a vehicle's history can be told. And now it is getting a new owner.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch

Surprisingly smooth and easy to drive, despite having a non-synchronized gearbox that still requires a good ear and a sensitive hand. With a bit of sensitivity and determination regarding engine RPM and movements, everything works fine. The current engine is a practically new 1200 industrial engine with 30 horsepower, having only a few operating hours and just a few hundred miles on the car. There is also an original exhaust system with a stamped VW logo. It is equipped with new 16" diagonal tires of the correct type, brakes, and battery. Additionally, a motor with the correct specifications, namely a 1100 engine with 25 horsepower, is included in the purchase.

  • Zustand Interieur

Beautifully worn and untouched, the whole point of the car is to let the objects speak for themselves, including the interior. A seat cover, along with the original upholstery in tatters on the driver's seat, does have a comfort disadvantage when the worn fabric on the backrest's entrance wear rubs against your back. However, the seat covers on the rest of the seats are more or less intact with undisturbed original upholstery underneath. The interior features a neat headliner with only a few charming moisture stains around the small divided rear window.

  • Zustand Exterieur

An original brown paint mixed with an incredibly cool, surface-rusted exterior. This preservation approach to a vehicle may, to some extent, trigger allergic reactions in those who prefer fully restored shiny vehicles. However, most people can recognize and appreciate the beautiful grandeur of its untouched condition. All the original, untouched details are present and intact, such as the footrests, bumpers, roof rack, lights, and indicators.

  • Zustand gesamt

An almost invaluable, untouched condition that has gained a high status over time, coupled with practically only two previous owners and a complete history. It doesn't get much better than this. And imagine if it gets to stay in the country and continue its Swedish ownership lineage – we don't place any specific value on that, but wouldn't it be nice?

Fakten zum Modell

At the top of the hierarchy among Beetles today, and in its time a simple, affordable, yet not always durable and reliable car if not serviced and cared for properly. The small windows now signify status, and after the Split model, the Oval model holds the next position. These two terms are synonymous with enthusiastic awareness today and an incredible value increase.
