Beschreibung

This was Volvo's most expensive and luxurious model in 1939. Only around 1,300 units were produced, and few preserved examples remain today. This particular PV56 was formerly a "crown vehicle" delivered to the I 18 regiment on Gotland in 1939. It was later sold by the military in 1954 to a farmer on the island. At that time, the car was painted in military green, a color still visible in the engine compartment. It received a new burgundy paint job at some point during its previous ownership. According to reports, the Volvo has been restored by a previous owner and is in roadworthy condition. The door locks are non-functional, and one hubcap has been lost over the years.

The current owner purchased the car from us this past summer for his collection and has driven it very sparingly. Since the premises where his collection is stored are being sold, he is liquidating his collection through us at Bilweb Auctions. We will be selling his entire collection throughout the fall and winter.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

The car runs well and the brakes are functioning properly. There is a slight jerkiness when starting to drive. The door locks are out of order.

  • Zustand Interieur:

Refurbished interior in decent condition, there's a stain on the carpet on the passenger side. A nice detail is that you can fold the seats into a bed and it can be used for overnight stays.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

An older repaint in good condition, the bumper should be replaced/refurbished for it to look really nice. Good tires on original rims, one hubcap is missing.

  • Zustand gesamt:

A model that is rare today and well worth preserving in this condition.

Fakten zum Modell

Volvo PV 56 (1938–1945)
The Volvo PV 53-56 series replaced the previous PV 51-52 models. The car was modernized with softer suspension, improved steering, a new interior, and an updated instrument panel. Externally, the vehicle received a more modern front end compared to earlier models. The PV 53 (Standard) and PV 55 (Luxury) did not have an extended luggage compartment, whereas the PV 54 (Standard) and PV 56 (Luxury) were equipped with one.

Production details are as follows:
1938–1945
PV53: 1,204 units
PV54: 814 units
PV55: 286 units
PV56: 1,321 units

During the war, Volvo developed its own wood gas generator, which was mounted at the rear of the vehicle with a support wheel, rather than being placed inside the luggage compartment. This allowed room for fuel storage without requiring a roof rack. The generator was referred to as the "aftertank." During the war, these cars were primarily delivered to the military and the police.
