Ford Lotus Cortina MkII TC — 1968

Swedish-sold and well-restored TC with solid history. A long period of inactivity from the mid-1970s to the early 1990s, followed by time spent in a museum, makes the odometer reading of just over 90,000 km highly plausible. The first owner must have been an enthusiastic driver, as the majority of those kilometers were covered during the car’s first seven active years.

"A Swedish-sold example with known history, nicely restored and subsequently well cared for and preserved—this makes it particularly desirable on the Cortina scene in general, and on the Lotus scene in particular."

Beschreibung

It was delivered to its first owner in April 1968. Most likely, that owner was Rolf from Hallstahammar, who later moved to Örnsköldsvik around the time the new computerized vehicle registry was introduced in 1972. He sold the Cortina in a deregistered state in 1973, and the car subsequently passed through Skutskär, Gävle, Älvkarleby, and Västerås.

The car was nearly removed from the registry in 1987 when authorities noted it had been off the road since the mid-1970s. It was quickly sold to preserve its registration, and a skilled panel beater in Västerås took over, completing the minor bodywork needed and respraying the car in a red Volvo color.

In 1989, Bosse Warmenius—well-known in the historic racing scene and an active Lotus Cortina Mk 1 competitor—acquired the car. He restored it and repainted it in its original color scheme, opting for the white version with a green stripe. After the original engine was needed as a spare for his race car, he built the current engine in 1990.

Despite being driven only a few hundred kilometers since, the car spent many years on display, including at Lagans Bilmuseum. A few years ago, Warmenius gave the engine a thorough inspection and replaced the water pump—a known weak point that is notoriously difficult to access, being located deep and at the front of the engine.

Importantly, a representative from the English Lotus Cortina Register has inspected and officially verified the car in writing. The most recent and final approved inspection was carried out on September 1, 2023.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

Clean and tidy engine bay. The engine and gearbox feel lively, strong, and deliver that classic backroad racing character. Clutch and brakes are equally responsive. The engine has been rebuilt and upgraded—it’s not the original unit, so there are no matching numbers. Below is the engine builder’s specification:

“L-block, bored and fitted with forged high-compression pistons. All bearings are race-grade (lead-bronze). The crankshaft is hardened, trued, and balanced along with the flywheel and race clutch. High-pressure oil pump and baffled sump to maintain oil flow during hard cornering. The cylinder head is ported and fitted with larger valves, stiffer valve springs, and L2 camshafts. The engine features a modern geared starter motor (original included) and an electric fuel pump.”

  • Zustand Interieur:

The current owner has devoted considerable time to the interior to bring it to an excellent condition in original specification. All Lotus TC instruments are in great shape, accompanied by a delightfully slim, nicely patinated original steering wheel.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

During the body restoration, the car was repainted in the classic white with green striping instead of its original Dragoon Red. The paintwork is beautiful and well-executed, with some chrome details remaining in nicely untouched condition. It currently rides on Minilite-style wheels with new Maxxis tires, and a set of original steel wheels is also included.

  • Zustand gesamt:

Many things done right—this is a road-ready car in lightly upgraded condition. Its on-road character, period-correct driving pleasure, and clear mechanical Lotus heritage all contribute to its sense of exclusivity.
