Volkswagen Karmann Ghia 1720 cc — 1960

Elegant and patinated with an engine that feels as one with the car. A specimen with an attitude best described by a typical Swedish expression – tastefully restrained in its modifications.

"As a sportier version of the model should have been then - with a lively Porsche engine to match the fast looks."

Beschreibung

It was delivered to its first owner in Kalmar in early December 1959, to the teacher Naemi Ahlgren. She drove the car until 1980, when it passed to Bertil Trulsson in Klippan. He kept it for five years, then a new owner took over and owned the car for 17 years. After that came new owners in Svedala, Kalmar and Holm outside Halmstad. The owner in Holm, a Porsche and VW enthusiast, is the one who rebuilt the Porsche industrial engine with classic tuning parts into the engine that powers the car today. The odometer currently reads 332.6 km and the fact that it has rolled over once with a total of 10,332 km seems more realistic than twice with 20,332 km. The current owner purchased it in 2022, has driven the car and refined it further, and now another Porsche 356 project beckons.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch

1720 cc cylinder barrels, sharp cam and ported heads deliver around 110 hp. The engine runs beautifully and comes alive at higher revs, sounds just as crisp as a sharpened 356 engine should, and gives the car the power it both needs and deserves. An upgraded dual-circuit braking system provides extra peace of mind. Also included is the BlazeCut hose mounted in the engine bay – an inexpensive fire insurance.

  • Zustand Interieur

Untouched interior with light wear, nicely patinated carpets, good headliner and door panels. A few extra instruments in a fairly discreet console. The sewn leather-covered steering wheel also breathes the right period. Modern (post-1960) seat belts have been fitted.

  • Zustand Exterieur

Nice paintwork with some minor touch-ups and marks, but presentable and fine. Chromed 356 wheels with good Continental tyres from 2019. Good chrome and glass, the older yellow single fog light with a nice vintage cover has been mounted for a long time. Fine older registration plates from the seventies are details that enhance a classic today.

  • Zustand gesamt

The entire car makes a rare and sympathetic impression; from the character of the Porsche engine to the used exterior to the patinated, yet well-appointed interior. These impressions are of course largely subjective, but it is difficult to resist the wholehearted charm of this particular example.

Fakten zum Modell

As early as 1953, the first prototype of a GT car was built on a VW Type 1 chassis by Carozzeria Ghia in Turin. It is said that German Karmann had attempted to interest Volkswagen in a special car but without success. When Ghia, with its fashionable Italian styling, presented its proposal, those in Wolfsburg took the bait. This resulted in a three-way collaboration between Ghia, Karmann and VW, with production starting at Karmann in Osnabrück in June 1955. Since the mechanics were the same as in the VW Type 1, it was not a true sports car and it had modest performance. The car offered for auction remedies precisely that detail. The design was considered then, and remains so today, both elegant and beautifully proportioned. In 1957 a cabriolet version of the model was launched. For the 1960 model year, changes were made to meet American market requirements; larger air intakes in the nose, the headlights moved up slightly and the rear lights became larger, as did the wheel arches. Internally, it became somewhat airier with openable side rear windows. Over the years the body underwent little change other than minor corrections, with the basic concept remaining unchanged from the start. Mechanically, development over the years largely followed the VW Type 1. Production ended in 1973, by which time 364,401 coupe versions had been built.
