"A fun car with a unique history. A vehicle in good driving condition that definitely stands out in any setting."

Beschreibung

A very unusual American car for its time. A shortened version of the AMC Hornet platform. This particular car is unique in its configuration, as according to hearsay, only 8 units of this version were ever built.

The body has been carefully restored, repainted, and re-striped as seen in the photos. The engine has received a startup service along with a cosmetic refresh of the engine bay. The brakes have also been inspected, a new battery has been installed, and the exhaust manifold gasket has been replaced.

See the historical story of this specific car under the history section below.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

The engine was somewhat hard to start initially. The car hasn't been used for an extended period, so adding some fresh fuel is recommended. During the test, the car was driven at low speed in a residential area, and everything functioned satisfactorily.

It is uncertain whether the recorded mileage accurately reflects the actual usage. The most recent inspection was in 2019, at 28,940 kilometers.

  • Zustand Interieur:

The interior of the car is in overall good condition. The newly sewn upholstery closely resembles the original – a nice touch. Panels, carpets, and headliner are all in good shape.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

The car was repainted about five years ago. No visible rust on the body. The car has not been inspected on a lift. Glass, trim, and lights are in good, usable condition.

Bold bumpers have been installed, along with a roof-mounted light bar. This was not connected during the test drive but is reported to be functional according to the owner. Good tires on original wheels.

  • Zustand gesamt:

A robust “Troll” in good condition. Sure, there are some minor details that could be improved or refined, but the overall impression in its current state is positive.

Fakten zum Modell

1973 AMC Gremlin

American George Hurst had an idea to create a vehicle that could be used to transport his Hurst Rescue Tool, nicknamed “The Jaws of Life.” The vehicle was to be equipped as a complete rescue unit, ready to assist race car drivers in the event of a crash that left them trapped, if the car caught fire, or in other emergency situations that could occur on the track. Hurst believed that a suitable car for the job was a V8-equipped Gremlin—offering a faster and more compact emergency response vehicle compared to the heavy rescue and race vehicles typically used at the time.

The "Hurst Rescue System One" was a fully outfitted rescue package, including fire suppression, first aid supplies, a 1,000-pound winch, and even a stretcher. Back in 1973, the vehicle and equipment cost over $11,000. According to unconfirmed reports, only eight examples of this unique rescue car were ever built.

AMC’s bold 2-door subcompact Gremlin was introduced in 1970. The model was created by shortening the AMC Hornet platform and adding a distinctive “Kammback” rear end. In the U.S., the Gremlin was classified as an economy car and competed with the Chevrolet Vega and Ford Pinto, as well as imports like the Volkswagen Beetle and Toyota Corolla. AMC marketed the Gremlin as “the first American-built import.” It turned out to be something of a success story for AMC, with total production reaching 671,475 units over its eight-year run.

This particular car was imported to Sweden by Skandinavisk Räddningsutrustning AB in Rättvik in 1979, coming from the Netherlands with the intention of being used as a rescue vehicle on racing circuits. It is documented that this very car was used at Gelleråsen at least once. The car’s complete history is unknown, and unfortunately, there is no original documentation to verify its authenticity as one of the original rescue cars. The original rescue equipment is also missing.

The car has undergone a thorough restoration, including a new paint job and refurbished interior. Mechanically, the car was in good shape and has primarily received a cosmetic refresh with new paint and detailing. This is a genuine V8 car, equipped with AMC’s 304 engine and automatic transmission.

The car was restored by Lennart Engström, who carried out most of the renovation himself. Lennart has been involved in the Swedish AMC hobby scene for nearly 40 years and has completed several high-quality restorations.
