SAAB 96 Sport 850 2 Stroke — 1964

Saab Sport was built for drivers who wanted more punch and personality from their car. With triple carburetors, a 4-speed manual gearbox, a sportier interior, and a more aggressive exterior, it stood apart from the standard 96. The 1964 model year is especially sought after by enthusiasts, as it marks the final year before Saab introduced the longer front end—the so-called “long nose”—on the 96.

"A renovated and ready-to-drive 1964 Saab Sport, this example starts instantly and the engine runs like a clock. It’s in top condition throughout and fitted with the desirable Golde rollback roof. Previously owned by the Saab 96 Club’s parts manager, it’s clearly been cared for by someone with deep knowledge and appreciation for the model."

A Truly Exceptional 1964 Saab Sport – Fully renovated by a Saab 96 Club Legend

This beautifully renovated and ready-to-drive 1964 Saab Sport is something truly special—not just because of its condition, but also because of its history.

The car was purchased in the early 1990s by Mr. Jensen, the parts manager for the Saab 96 Club. With his deep knowledge, passion, and extensive network, he found this example, which had been stored away and off the road since the early 1970s. It had even fallen off the Swedish vehicle register.

What followed was a meticulous, nut-and-bolt restoration. The car was completely stripped to bare metal, with every component rebuilt, repaired, or replaced using new or NOS (new old stock) parts. It was fully repainted, received some rechromed elements, and had tinted windows installed. The interior was entirely renovated and reupholstered to a very high standard. Given Mr. Jensen’s role with the Saab 96 Club, the level of detail and authenticity in this restoration is extraordinary.

The renovation was completed around 1995, and since then, the car was only used as a summer vehicle—mainly for Saab club events. Tragically, Mr. Jensen passed away in 2010 during an event at Anderstorp Raceway, where he was accompanied by his brother, also a devoted Saab enthusiast.

The car remained in the care of Mr. Jensen’s wife, stored properly in a heated garage. Now, 15 years later, she has decided it’s time to let it go to a new home. Just recently, her late husband’s brother serviced the car, replacing the ignition coils and rear brakes.

It’s truly hard to believe this restoration was completed 30 years ago—the car looks like it was finished yesterday. It runs perfectly, needs nothing, and is ready to be driven and enjoyed. For any Saab collector or enthusiast, this car checks every box: provenance, quality, rarity, and condition.

Simply turn the key—and enjoy.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

Under the bonnet, the engine features triple carburetors and separate oil lubrication, as found on the Saab Sport. Factory-rated at 54 horsepower, it delivers a lively and engaging driving experience. The engine starts easily and sounds just right—crisp and confident.

Performance is strong, with good power delivery, smooth gear changes through the 4-speed manual gearbox, and no issues noted during test driving. The rear brakes have recently been serviced, and new ignition coils were installed to ensure reliable operation.

The car sits on a set of super nice, undamaged alloy wheels with good tires. It is inspection-exempt for life in Sweden and absolutely ready to be driven home and enjoyed.

  • Zustand Interieur:

interior is in remarkably good condition throughout. Everything was reupholstered during the renovation—including the seats, door cards, interior panels, headliner, and carpets—and remains clean and undamaged.

There are only a few minor observations: the stitching on the front edge of the rear seat has come slightly loose, there’s a small scuff on the driver’s door card pocket, and the passenger door pocket doesn’t clip closed properly (see pictures). The dashboard is neat and tidy, with all gauges fully functional—including the clock. A stylish wooden steering wheel adds a nice finishing touch to the cabin.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

Bodywork is straight and free from rust or damage, with only one minor flaw—a small, soft dent about 10 cm in size on the lower part of the right rear wing, barely noticeable in person. The paintwork is glossy and presents beautifully, still looking almost like new despite the restoration being completed nearly 30 years ago. The only paint imperfection noted is a small touch-up area under the boot lid (see picture). The exterior overall is neat and well-finished, with fine details and exceptionally nice, undamaged chrome throughout.

  • Zustand gesamt:

Quite honestly, it would be hard to find a finer example. This Saab Sport not only looks amazing—it drives just as well. It’s a rare opportunity to own a car that’s been renovated with such expertise, care, and deep knowledge of the brand.

Fakten zum Modell

The Saab Sport was a special model of the Saab 96 introduced in 1962 as a replacement for the Saab GT750. The Sport model was presented at the Stockholm Motor Show in February 1962. This was the first time Saab's sporty Gran Turismo car was sold in Sweden since the GT750 was never officially sold in Sweden. It had the same body as the Saab 96 but with different interior and equipment. The rear seat was a simpler version, with plenty of space in special compartments at the bottom for rally equipment, such as spare parts and snow chains. On the outside, the difference from the standard 96 was the dual chrome strips along the lower part of the body, the additional lights, and the different hubcaps. The engine was an 841 cubic centimeter three-cylinder two-stroke engine with three Solex carburetors, providing 52 horsepower compared to the standard 38. The engine was lubricated via a separate oil tank, eliminating the need to manually mix oil with gasoline (as in the standard model). The gearbox had four gears. The Saab Sport also featured front disc brakes, which was unusual at the time. The wheels had four bolts instead of five as on the standard 96. In markets like the USA, the car was called the GT850 (analogous to the earlier 750), but after Saab's successes in the Monte Carlo Rally, the designation was changed to Monte Carlo 850 from 1964 onwards. The Sport model evolved alongside the regular Saab 96. It's worth noting that the tuned engine disappeared with the introduction of the four-stroke engine in the 1967 model year. The model was then called the Monte Carlo V4 and differed only in terms of equipment from the standard model.
