"Project car that starts and can be moved under its own power. Newly renovated brakes, otherwise untouched. Requires a lot of work to be restored. Has fallen out of the vehicle register, so an origin inspection is required before the official inspection."

Beschreibung

The car was purchased new in March 1955 by a farmer living in Ambjörby, in northern Värmland. It was used until 1973, when it was put away in the barn. There it remained untouched until 2024, when the owner passed away and the farm was to be sold. While clearing out the outbuildings, the car was uncovered after 50 years of rest.

The heirs were unable to keep the car, so it was sold to an enthusiast. He sent it to a renowned Volkswagen expert in Åmål, where extensive work was done to renovate and restore the braking system. Everything was replaced except for the brake drums, which were resurfaced.

The current owner is selling the car due to lack of time for restoration. The car has fallen out of the vehicle register and requires an approved origin inspection with the Swedish Transport Agency before being registered for road use. The original registration certificate is missing, but a copy of the old registration document from the National Archives is included to facilitate the origin inspection.

The odometer shows just over 18,000 kilometers. It is unclear whether it has rolled over once or twice. There are two 100,000-kilometer awards on the dashboard, suggesting the car has covered over 200,000 kilometers, but this cannot be confirmed.

Only one ignition key is included. The spare wheel and jack are missing. The roof rack is said to have been mounted on the car since the 1950s.

The last two photos in the series show how the car looked when it was uncovered from the barn in 2024.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

Equipped with an air-cooled 1200cc engine producing 30 hp, untouched since 1973. A new battery has been installed, along with new contact breaker points and fuel lines. After that, the entire braking system was refurbished.

The car starts and runs (see video) Needs some attention due to the long time in the barn. The electrical system needs attention. The semaphore turn signals are functional, but the windshield wipers do not work.

  • Zustand Interieur:

Original interior with worn seat covers. It is unknown what the upholstery looks like underneath, but the small visible parts of the original fabric appear to be in good condition. The door panels have also been covered with protective fabric. The headliner seems to have held up well.

An old car radio is included, but its condition is unknown. Seat belts of the original type are included separately. See photos for details.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

Flaking paint with rust, scratches, and dents. The chrome is worn and rusty. There is a crack in the windshield on the right side. The tires are old and dry and need to be replaced.

We were unable to inspect the underside on a lift, but the visible parts show a rusty underside, rust holes at the lower edges of the fenders, and heavy surface rust on the suspension components, etc. Expect rust in the floor pan as well. Please examine the photos carefully for more details.

  • Zustand gesamt:

A project car that requires a full restoration to be in top condition. However, some enthusiasts appreciate the worn, patina look and may choose to only repair what is necessary. The buyer has both options to consider.

Fakten zum Modell

For the 1955 model year, Volkswagen introduced new upholstery. At the same time, the shape of the fuel tank was redesigned to allow more luggage space. Later that year, a dual-exit exhaust system was introduced, along with a new steering wheel and more easily adjustable seats.

In 1955, Volkswagen surpassed one million cars produced, and that year, Scania-Vabis in Södertälje became the world's largest VW importer.

The Volkswagen Type 1, known as the "Beetle," holds the record as the world's most-produced car. By 1972, over 15 million units had been built, surpassing the Ford Model T as the most-produced vehicle in history. Production of the Volkswagen Type 1 in Germany ended in 1985, but the model continued to be manufactured in Mexico until July 30, 2003. The last Beetle ever made now resides in Volkswagen’s museum. In total, more than 21 million Beetles were produced.
