"An older restoration that makes the car feel more authentic compared to modern over-restorations. With these old cars, it's important to have a good ear for the engine and maintain the right RPM when shifting the unsynchronized gearbox. It's an experience that increases the driver's awareness of the complexity of driving and should be mandatory in today’s driving education. A ready-to-drive A-Ford where we recommend a minor service check, as it has been driven very little in recent years."

Beschreibung

Here you can read the story of the A-Ford.

The car was sold new in Denmark in 1929. The first owner was a bicycle dealer residing in Odense. The car was first registered on November 29, 1929, under registration number M7793. A year later, the number was changed to M6940. The last record before the outbreak of World War II is from 1936 when the car was still in Odense. After that, the records jump forward to March 23, 1954, when the car is re-registered. The owner at this time is business manager Carl Olsen, also residing in Odense.

In the late 1960s, Swedish car enthusiasts began showing interest in old vehicles, which they began calling "veteran cars." This marked the beginning of a new social movement in Sweden. At the time, Sweden was going through the so-called "record years" with steadily rising incomes among regular workers, while the state was implementing large social reforms. Swedes were beginning to have money left over after covering life's necessities and were encouraged to take up hobbies. This led to a hunt for pre-war cars that these new hobbyists could restore. At home in Sweden, most people had been able to afford newer vehicles, and the so-called veteran cars were largely scrapped or, in some cases, buried in the forest. In neighboring Denmark, old cars had been used longer than in Sweden, so many Swedes looked southward. In the late 1960s, a large number of veteran cars, especially A-Fords, were imported from Denmark, as there were plenty of them available.

During this import wave, the owner of Gummicentralen in Falköping purchased the A-Ford in question. On April 25, 1968, the car was imported to Sweden through the port of Gothenburg. We have been told that the car underwent a restoration, which was completed in the early 1980s.

The A-Ford was not registered in the Swedish vehicle register until 1989, when the current owner acquired it. In 1991, the car was approved by the Swedish Transport Agency and was allowed to be driven on Swedish roads (see selected images of documentation). When the current owner acquired the car, it had already been restored, except for the interior. In the 1990s, he purchased and installed a new interior from Le Baron Bonney Co. in the USA. The car has been stored in a garage and hasn’t been driven much in recent years. The owner is now selling the car due to age. The interior is made of wool, and there is some damage to the upholstery, which we believe is due to moth infestation. See the images.

The car comes with copies of older documents, allowing you to trace its origin. As a curiosity, it can be mentioned that a 1929 A-Ford Tudor Sedan when it was brand new in its home country, the USA, cost $525.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

The engine and drivetrain were reportedly restored in the 1980s. The car starts easily and sounds correct. It is equipped with a four-cylinder side-valve engine and a non-synchronized three-speed gearbox. The engine runs smoothly with no strange noises in the drivetrain during operation. The clutch bites/rattles slightly when engaging the drive. The brakes make a bit of noise during braking. Both of these issues may be due to the car having been stationary and unused for a long period, and it could potentially be caused by surface rust on the contact areas. This might improve over time with more frequent use of the car. However, this is more of an educated guess and not something we can guarantee. Otherwise, the car is completely ready to drive.

  • Zustand Interieur:

The interior was replaced with new fabric in the 1990s. The upholstery is made of wool, and unfortunately, the seats appear to have suffered from moth damage. Otherwise, the interior is in good condition. Please see the pictures for more details.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

The paintwork is done in the older style. There are some paint chips and a few small bubbles in the finish. When opening and closing the bonnet on these vehicles, the metal can flex slightly. As a result, there is some slight cracking in the paint on the bonnet, though it is only visible upon very close inspection. During the restoration, the correct material for the roof was sourced, and it remains in excellent condition. The tires are newly made, of the diagonal type, and in good condition, and they are the correct model. These were fitted a few years after the restoration. The spare tire is a diagonal tire from the 1960s.

  • Zustand gesamt:

An older restoration that has allowed the car to retain its charm. It is perfect for classic car meets and leisurely drives on low-traffic roads.

Fakten zum Modell

The A-Ford is relatively common in Sweden, but it is rarely seen on the roads. The A-Ford was the successor to Ford's best-seller, the T-Ford. When the A-Ford was introduced in November 1927 as a 1928 model, it arrived just in time. Competitors had already caught up and surpassed the Ford Motor Company with better, faster, and more comfortable cars. With the A-Ford, Ford now had a modern car to market. A stronger engine, a proper gearbox, and a stylish design made the A-Ford an immediate success. By February 4, 1929, one million units had already been sold. By the end of July that year, sales had doubled to two million cars. Production of the A-Ford ended in March 1932, with more than 4 million units produced. According to the Swedish A-Ford Club, there are about 1,200 A-Fords registered in Sweden. The most common variant is the 1930-31 Ford Tudor. A wide variety of new parts are available, making it easy to keep these cars running.
