Fakten zum Modell
W.R. Morris was inspired by Henry Ford and, unlike most other British manufacturers, he purchased component parts for his cars from outside suppliers and was thus able to keep prices down. Morris soon became Britain's largest car manufacturer. During the 1920s Wolseley was acquired and in competition with the Austin Seven the Minor model was developed and introduced. Success eluded the model but it formed the basis for the MG Midget, which became a success. However, by 1935 W.R. Morris had already sold his shareholdings and Morris, MG and Wolseley became part of the Nuffield Group. In 1952 the company merged with its former main competitor Austin in the British Motor Corporation. Relatively quickly the differences between the various marques were eliminated and Morris became copies of Austin models. When British Leyland Motor Corporation was formed in 1968 the former BMC became a division within the new organisation. Morris was eventually used only for the rear-wheel drive models. From 1971 only the Morris Marina remained. It was discontinued in 1980 and replaced by the Morris Ital until 1984, after which the Morris story came to an end.
Back to 1948, when Alec Issigonis had been working since the Second World War to develop a new small car. He tested front-wheel drive, boxer engine and other innovations which would partly appear in the Mini over a decade later. Now it became a new and successful era with a small people's car manufactured from 1948 to 1971. However, it featured conventional rear-wheel drive and a 4-cylinder inline engine with 4-speed gearbox. The model nonetheless offered a range of innovations such as unitary construction, rack-and-pinion steering and independent front suspension with torsion bar springs. Originally the model had an old-fashioned side-valve engine and a split windscreen as well as low-mounted headlights, which were moved up into the wings from 1951. For the 1953 model year Series II arrived with a new overhead-valve engine of 803cc. In autumn 1956 the Morris Minor 1000 was presented. A new engine and new rear axle ratio made the car really sprightly and with improved road-holding it was considerably more pleasant to drive. The appearance was modernised with a full windscreen and larger rear window. The car sold very well and in January became the first British car to have been manufactured in one million examples. The model was produced as two- and four-door saloons, a two-door cabriolet called Tourer and an estate Traveller. There were also a couple of light commercial vehicles, a van and pickup in a series called Morris Commercial.
Despite new models such as the Mini and 1100 there remained demand for the Morris Minor which was manufactured throughout the 1960s and into the 1970s. The last to be manufactured was a Traveller on 1 April 1971.
In total 1,303,331 examples of various Morris Minors were manufactured.
