"The Midget from the early 1930s epitomizes the early 1930s sports cars that were driven on the winding roads of the English countryside. Some of these vehicles also found their way to Scandinavia. Here is a fine example with a classic color scheme and authentic specification."

Beschreibung

This car was registered for traffic again on 1 December 1987. The owner at that time was the well-known motoring historian Björn-Eric Lindh. In addition to a comprehensive restoration, he did thorough work researching the car's history. This car with chassis number J2 4368 was assembled at the M.G. factory in Abingdon in December 1933. On 10 January 1934 it was inspected in Sweden and on 18 January it was registered to the first owner in Vårby, receiving registration number B 917. Throughout the 1930s it changed hands several times but remained in the Stockholm area. After the war it ended up in southern Sweden and by the 1950s it had moved westward, ending up in the Gothenburg area, and in October 1958 it was deregistered for good. The story might have ended there had it not been found during a clearing out of a basement in the early 1970s. At that point Björn-Eric entered the picture. Between 1972 and 1987 the car was restored, the engine came from another car and was renovated in England by an expert "over there". It was first test-started again on 21 December 1986. The car was then driven for the first time as a restoration on Björn-Eric's 50th birthday in November 1987. Black paintwork and interior with "Apple green" wheels. So the Vårby car was rolling in the Stockholm area again. After a three-year stint in Gothenburg it returned once more to the 08 region when the current owner, also a well-known figure in motoring history circles for many years, acquired the car in February 1993 and it has since been part of his extensive private collection. The seller and Bilwebauctions chose for logistical reasons to leave the vehicle in the collection during inspection and photographing.

The car comes with period-correct attributes and documentation, including the fine documented history compiled by Björn-Eric Lindh.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch

Started up for sale but not driven for several years. According to information, fully functional when last driven before being garaged in the collection. Now requires an inspection, but with solid and straightforward mechanics, there should be no problem getting it back into use.

  • Zustand Interieur

Fine and charming green leather upholstery in "Apple Green". Good condition on other details such as steering wheel, controls, instrument panel in polished metal and period-correct gauges.

  • Zustand Exterieur

Fine paintwork and chrome, glass, trim, emblems and lighting details. Fine wire wheels in green paint with older tyres. Simple convertible top to stretch over the cockpit. Fine and clean engine compartment.

  • Zustand gesamt

A car for anyone wanting to cruise around in one of the 1930s' most classic sports cars with a folding windscreen and cut-down doors and large spoke wheels – here you sit "on the rear axle" and can enjoy speed and wind even at modest tempo. The feeling of being part in an Agatha Christie novel is palpable – it doesn't get more British sports car aura than this. This example's condition and history are a flawless combination for those who appreciate this era of motoring, a classic collector's and enthusiast's car.

Fakten zum Modell

MG Morris Garages was founded by W.R. Morris. He first sold bicycles and then motor cars. From 1913 he manufactured cars under his own name, Morris Motor Company. He retained Morris Garages as a separate business and from 1924 he sold Morris cars with tuned engines and special coachwork as M.G. cars.

During the 1930s a number of different models were produced which were named as letter types, including J-type and P-type. The "J" Midget is regarded as an iconic sports car and laid the foundation for MG's reputation for building light, nimble and enjoyable cars. According to records, 2,083 examples of the 2-seater sports roadster were manufactured 1932-34. The engines were 847 cc with overhead camshaft and twin SU carburettors of approximately 36 bhp. The bodies were two-seater open roadsters.

In 1935 W.R. Morris also sold MG to the Nuffield Organisation. In 1968 MG became part of British Leyland and in 1980 it was over. Although the marque lived on with Rover and later BMW, by 2005 it was finished again. However, Nanjing Automobile Group has now dusted off the name MG once more. But that is quite another story.
