Beschreibung

This Porsche 718 RSK replica was built in the early 2000s by its current owner, a trained workshop mechanic and car enthusiast. It was based on a 1965 VW 1200 that he had purchased in October 1980. Toward the end of the last millennium, plans began to take shape to do something fun with the Beetle. The chassis was shortened, and a suitable body was sought. At Speed Center in Stockholm, he found a Swedish-made fiberglass body modeled after the Porsche 718 RSK—a racing car that competed on European circuits between 1957 and 1960.

The chassis was restored, sandblasted, zinc-sprayed, and epoxy-painted. Brakes, spindles, joints, etc. have been replaced. The wheels are original Porsche. The electrical system runs on 12 volts. The gearbox is the original VW 1200 unit. The engine currently fitted is a dismantled, cleaned, and serviced VW 1200 producing 34 hp.

Included with the car are also two additional engines if you want a bit more speed: a VW 1500 with twin carburetors and milled heads, otherwise original. This engine has been dismantled, cleaned, and serviced. The second is a VW 1600 modified in the 1970s, with no more than 50 miles on it. This engine was reworked by Trimco (Claes Ebbernäs) with milled heads, bored crankcase, balanced crankshaft, larger oil pump and enlarged oil passages, sportier camshaft, a twin-port Weber DCN carburetor, new cylinders and pistons, 009 distributor, and more. All accessories needed to install the engines in the car are included.

Over the years, the owner has been more interested in working on the car and engines—a stress-relieving hobby—than in driving it. The car passed its ‘final’ inspection in 2021, meaning it is inspected and road-ready.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch:

Starts easily and the engine and drivetrain ran well. During a short test drive in a residential area, the steering, clutch, gearbox, brakes, etc. all appeared to function properly and as smoothly as a typical VW 1200. Thanks to the car’s light weight and low, open design, it still delivered a great sense of speed. It has not been inspected on a lift, but what could be seen looked good, and the owner has carried out the necessary work on the underbody.

  • Zustand Interieur:

The interior is functional and well-made, with a focus on usability. The seats offer good comfort, and the steering wheel, controls, instruments, etc. all work well.

  • Zustand Exterieur:

A raw and robust car, primer-coated with details left to complete, but everything needed is there and working well. Fitted with good Porsche wheels and quality Firestone tires.

  • Zustand gesamt:

Sure, it’s a kit car and a replica, but with proven Volkswagen mechanics combined with the looks and character of Porsche racing cars from the late ’50s and early ’60s, and with solid craftsmanship, this makes for a delightful machine. A true enthusiast’s car.

Fakten zum Modell

The Beetle and its history need little introduction—it is an icon. Since the body was bolted to the chassis, it relatively early became the basis for various conversions with alternative bodies. These ranged from simple beach buggies to replicas of other well-known car models, particularly different Porsche models such as the 356 Speedster and various racing versions.

The Porsche 718 RSK was a racing car produced between 1957 and 1961, developed from its predecessor, the 550. The engine was, in classic Porsche fashion, a 4-cylinder air-cooled boxer. Initially it was a 1498 cc unit producing 142 hp at 5,900 rpm. It featured dual overhead camshafts per cylinder bank with two valves per cylinder, Weber twin-choke carburetors, and a five-speed gearbox. The wheelbase measured 220 cm, with a dry weight of 520 kg. With this small car, Porsche achieved numerous successes in club races and the World Sportscar Championship, where it managed to outperform much more powerful competitors. At Le Mans in 1958, the 718 finished third and fourth, beaten only by Ferrari’s twice-as-large Testa Rossa. At the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1960, they secured a one-two finish. A 718 RSK also won the Targa Florio three times—1959, 1960, and 1963—two of those victories with Sweden’s own Joakim Bonnier at the wheel. Despite its power disadvantage, Porsche still finished as high as second in the World Championship standings in 1960. Several drivers also raced the 718 in Formula II. By simply moving the steering wheel to the center, Porsche turned it into a single-seater racer. One of the very best in it was indeed Joakim Bonnier.

The kit cars built as a homage to the 718 RSK are often somewhat more restrained and practical for normal road use, but the feeling of sitting just a few inches above the ground in a small, lightweight machine is very much the same.
